I’ve done several searches and didn’t find a thread for this year, so hopefully I didn’t miss it.
My S applied for this scholarship last night. We’re hoping to make the $4k level because I think that’s the minimum necessary to be eligible for the Weigel (med school) later. We already know that S won’t be competitive past the $4k level, so we’re just hoping he makes it that far. We’re in CA in case that matters.
Stats: GPA: 3.97uw, 4.5(ish)w, 4.0 college GPA with 28 DE units SAT: 1490, single sitting Awards: Nat’l Merit Semifinalist (very likely to advance), Phi Theta Kappa (honor soc. for 2-year colleges), AP Scholar with Honor, regional “best supporting actor” award, lots of honor roll/outstanding student stuff Community service: 150ish hours, incl. certification as an Emergency Medical Responder ECs: Drama Club / Thespian with leadership and awards, Anime Club with leadership, Writer’s Society AGI: $50k for family of 3
No work experience - this will hurt him, especially combined with our income. S’s grandfather was an Elk for many years, and I remember his lodge quite fondly. This has no bearing at all on scholarship selection, btw - sentimental attachment only.
Feel free to post as we wait for results. Stats not necessary.
@DiotimaDM I couldn’t find a thread either. I did apply and would also love to at least get to the $4000 level. My SAT is’t nearly as high (1370) but I have done several things with state and national recognition so am always hopeful. GPA is 3.8 / 4.0 unweighted, all Honors coursework. at a competitive private school where 100% go to college. One ‘B’ in 10th grade. A lot of leadership in civic engagement, student political issues on the state level, theatre, music, etc… Good luck to all!
Stats:
GPA: 3.93 UW
ACT: 34 (single sitting)
Awards: Various state-level awards, many school and district level awards, a couple national awards
Community service: ~280 hours (Clinic volunteering, science museum volunteer, Multi-Cultural Ambassador, tutoring, etc)
ECs: Research Intern (Completed own graduate-level research project and presented at a symposium); High School Mock Trial (Founder, President; Science Olympiad (Co-Founder, Co-president); Law and Leadership Institute (Assistant Mock Trial Coach one year; participant otherwise); Student Council (Interim Leader (11); Homeroom Senator (9, 10); Grade Representative (12)); Joyce Ivy Foundation Fellow (Communications and Philanthropic teams); Tour guide for my school (we’re a unique school); School Newspaper (Publishing Chair, Academic Section Lead); Ski Club (only athletic activity my school has)
AGI: $0 for family of 2 (My dad got fired a couple of years ago. He has a disability and severe heath issues, so while he’s been able to get hired, his health keeps him from being able to accept the positions.)
No work experience
Other things of note, I am taking classes full time at the Ohio State University. (Took my first class (Calculus I) there in tenth grade.)
I made it to the 4k level in 2015 (usually advancing beyond the 4k level requires really significant financial need, well into the low income range). My core stats were 1400 CR+M, 4.0, >1000 community service hours, multiple jobs and internships.
AGI was 72k for family of 2
I offer my full winning application through my site to families that are interested.
@MaeBen4, in Oklahoma 3guys and 3girls advance from each district. And then we have 3 each who win state (at least 4000$) and advance to the national level competition. Some states have more kids advance to nationals, some fewer.
