ELKS scholarship

how competitive is the elks most valuable student scholarship?

i know they have different levels like local, district, state, and national

i live in CA.. does anyone have any info as to what types of pl have a chance?

i have high SAT scores and GPA but i dunno what they else really look for

I too would like to know the answer to this question, if anyone has any insight.

Im applying too. Is it the one due tomorrow?

They also look at extra curriculars and financial need.

i turned in my application yesterday.

I had to come back with my parents cause I forgot to have them sign it (pathetic i know).

Anyway, I got to talk to the guy who is judging at the local level and he said SAT scores and financial need are really important. He also said 3 males and 3 females will be chosen at the local level at my lodge. I'm not sure about others though.

hmm ok.. yea it's due tomorrow and my counselor barely told me about it today

i've gotten most of it done but how many exhibits do most pl send?

and is it ok if they are black and white copies?

That would have been smart to do. I wonder how many scholarships will be given out at my lodge.

I turned mine in two days ago. i think I put in 6 exhibits cuz I wasn't sure if they were required or not. Black and white copies should be fine

oh really?

i thought it had to be like a lot bc they say that u can include up to 20 supplemental papers and the certificate stuff can be front/back

so i was gonna use like 5/6 pgs for the app stuff and like 15 pgs (f/b so 30) of exhibits..

is that overkill?

my d turned the application today..it was a lot of work because her councelor told her about it 2 days ago! i think it's very very competitive.. if you look at last year semifinalists, they had amazing stats and community services and leadership!! anyways my d tried and wishes for the best!! good luck everybody!!

do you happen to have the link for that? (semifinalists)

For the post-ers asking about the exhibits: Last year I included the max - 20 pages of exhibits. Any of them where the originals had color, I did as color photocopies. If the exhibit was smaller than a page (things like newspaper clippings), I put it on a brightly colored background page. The color pages added (I thought) a lot to my brochure. I managed two local awards and one of the $4,000 national awards. (California)

Here is last year's thread: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/financial-aid-scholarships/443595-2008-most-valuable-student-scholarship.html?highlight=elks+scholarship

Didn't have D2 apply for this because we thought the financial piece would hurt her chances. I thought I read somewhere that parts of the app were worth certain percentages???? I'll see if I can find it but I vaguely remember reading that even if you had perfect scores/essay/etc the financial aid section could throw you out of consideration. I've read so many scholarship apps/rules lately so I hope I'm not remembering the wrong thing!!!

^ Yes, last year there were set percentages and I found the rubric (It may be different this year!!!):

*The application is judged on the following merits:

Scholarship ACT or SAT score 450 points
Transcript
Counselor Report

Leadership Employment 350 points
Community Service
Honors/Awards
Leadership
Extracurricular Activities
Recommendations, Completeness and
Presentation of Brochure
Essay

Financial Need 195 points
Exhibits 5 points

Total 1000 points *

I almost didn't apply, because the financial need portion was my "weakest" component (My family is "middle class."), but it only counts for 19.5%. I am very glad I did apply!

This is very helpful.

what are you guys's sat scores? i'm in 90+ percentile but i bet the 10% above me are the ones even applying to scholarships... lol

I applyed for this and made it to the next level. I got the letter on the 12th. Yet, the only thing I lack are the exhibits... Hopefully they are only 5 points lol. I don't think it should hurt too bad, Newspapers aren't too interested in good students, only good/great athletes it seems. Plus I'm not the artsy type so yeah....

Anyways, I have a 4.1 GPA, 29 ACT, and good e.c.'s, and my teacher wrote me a killer recommendation. I think my paper isn't too bad either, I wrote about Social Security.

wow newsameold! you already got a leader about it??? thats impressive. i was reading that last year it took forever for them to get out letters. congrats! i applied as well, and im very nervous. once again, "middle class" kills on scholarships. ugh

i got a letter also, but it only said they recieved my application. They said they will inform me if i get past the local level by the 26th

the guy i talked to at the lodge was friendly but very business like and only told me that judging would "begin soon". so idk what that means. is there a timeline for all the judging in this scholarship?

well I'm sure it depends on the local lodge you applyed to. i think im in a decent financial situation. my family is at 63k.

what are your guys's stats? gotta know my competition lol.
