hi everyone i'm a junior in highschool right now and ive just started the whole college process, its all very exciting. i recently visited elon and went on a tour, although the tour was very informative and gave me a much better understanding of the great environment and surroundings of elon, i'd like to look behind the so called portrayed veil. i'd like to know if elon is a school that has parties to an extent where a student will not be bored or find themselves playing card games on a fiday night. if i'm looking for a place to have fun will elon be able to sustain my tastes? thank you

I don’t think you’ll be bored on a Friday night. It depends to it takes to sustain your tastes as everyone is different.

yea this is true, but i mean is elon a school where a student can have the opportunity of drinking and going to parties if one chooses?

Absolutely and then some!

AWESOME! thanks!!

I can tell you from personal experience, Elon parties really, really hard. Every weekend (which usually begins thursday night!), there are plenty of opportunities for you to do whatever your heart desires

Sweet but what do u mean by hard? should i join a fraternity?

yes, you should join a fraternity! im also a junior in HS right now, and am applying to elon early decision next year. if i get in, im definitely joining a sorority! and if the social scene is dull, we can just party together! lol

Well everyone should definitely rush, just to see if it’s something you’re interested in. Rushing does not mean pledging necessarily. And by hard I mean, Elon is a heavy drinking school. The drug scene is not big at all, but if you want to get some greens, it’s there. Weekends are always fun and never a shortage of partying. That said, if you want to party w/o the pleasures of alcohol and what not, you don’t need to.

“Elon is a heavy drinking school”

true. I am from NC, the school is really good, but there is a heavy drinking student body.

What school isn’t?

Well there are many. A school such as Hampshire is not a big drinking school at all. They have a drug culture more than anything. Then there are schools such as Hamilton that drink and party, but not to heavy into either side.

thanks so much this has really helped

any recommendations on which fraternity i should join?

The problem with greek life is that you spend most of your time partying with only your fraternity. It’s difficult to go to a frat party that you don’t belong to, but on the other hand it’s not hard if you’re unaffiliated. If you think you’ll be happy with seeing your brothers 95 percent of the time, greek life would be for you. You definitely do not need to go greek to party at Elon.

And Rex, the drug scene is most definitely as prevalent as drinking. It’s kind of a problem, actually. I saw a survey a couple years ago that said approximately 25 percent of Elon students should go to rehab, for alcohol or drugs. If it’s not your thing, don’t worry, you won’t see much of it.

What kinds of non-Greek activities are there? Is it possible to basically ignore the Greek/drinking scene?

Is it possible to basically ignore the Greek/drinking scene? — YES —

MOST kids at ELON don’t belong to any of the Greeks. and there are tons of student organizations. Even some of the Greeks are more known for volunteering than Partying.

Elon was a party school 15 years ago and some reputations die hard. But ELON today is a very very different school than it was almost two decades ago.

Don’t let internet chatter and bravado scare you.

do you need to be in a greek to party? how are the student-athletes handling school/sports/social?

Not to be a downer, but I am more interested in the intellectual/service aspects of Elon, as well as ‘sober’ fun… Do I have a chance of that at Elon without being seen as a loser? (Not that I condone those who do party hard…It’s just not my thing.)

glad to hear all this. Elon was recommended. I think we’ll take it off the list. He’s a bit of a square.
