I feel like maybe I’m missing something, but it seems on the website that the only auditions for the BFA Acting and MT programs are on campus? Could that be right, that they don’t audition anywhere else in the country? Thanks—

That is correct.

Last year they also had auditions at the Southeastern Theatre Conference. But the campus auditions are the best for seeing the facilities and meeting the faculty and students.

^^^However, the Southeastern Conference is in the same region of the country as Elon so for anyone from a different region of the country (ie, HSN is from the West Coast), a trip to Elon or a trip to the Southeastern Conference are one and the same. The concept of Unifieds or else schools that hold auditions in other cities like NYC, LA, etc. is for students to not have to travel to where the colleges are located but can audition in their own region.

Wow. Thanks for the info. This is a real drag as far as I’m concerned–making a major (mostly likely connecting flights) trip to see just one school and program…gotta do some thinking here. And yet I’ve heard such great things…oh well, we’ll just have to see!

Last year one of the audition dates was the same as an Open House weekend. It was in November and it was my d’s first audition. It was a great weekend and a super audition experience for my her. She had a chance to see one of their shows and really get a feel for the campus. Elon is a great program and well worth the trip to audition if you can swing it. (Jet Blue flies nonstop pretty cheap from a number of cities).

To my knowledge - they only audition Juniors at SETC. And that “audition” is just to say --we are interested in having you come to Elon and Audition. It’s true --auditions are only on campus. That way, the student can see the facilities, meet the faculty, attend a class and talk to current students. In my opinion --Elon is one of the BEST Music Theatre Programs in the Country and well worth the trip to audition. They don’t need to participate in Unifieds to get outstanding students.

Elon is so very worth the trip to campus for a fabulous audition day and a chance to witness first hand the talented faculty and students and what you would experience being in the MT program. The training there is so great in all areas of MT, with loving faculty and supportive students who become close friends. The opportunity for growth for the profession is very real for the students. We were there last week for the Collage program and can’t believe our son is now a senior!

Although it is an expense, a trip to campus is well worth the time. We used Southwest four years ago to audition after actually making the drive down from the Philly area the spring before. That first personal visit convinced our son to audition there. The campus is beautiful and you get a very intimate impression of the program, faculty and students, and can sometimes coordinate the trip with a show. I know most folks would prefer to visit every campus where they plan to audition, but can’t always do that. However, when you consider that this program might be your sole intense focus for the next four years, it’s definitely worth the trip.

Ericsmom, best wishes to your son as he rounds out his final year at Elon! Hard to believe isn’t it?

Since we are auditioning on November 20th will we find out sooner or do we wait until March/April?

Last year the children who auditioned in November heard an acceptance, rejection or deferral by mid-December. They were told this at their audition. They will probably tell you when you can expect to hear something at your November 20 audition.

Thanks for that information! What is the average amount of kids that they will audition in one day?

My daughter auditioned last year on this weekend and she received a phone call in mid December that she had been accepted. I believe there were approximately 60 students audition on the day we were there. Good luck!! It is a wonderful school.

HSN-
I remember thinking the same thing. Elon was the only flight I took of 10 auditions, and I was so annoyed as to why they didn’t offer a Unified audition.

HOWEVER----I am SO glad that they do it the way they do. The day of your audition, you not only audition, but talk to professors, interact with current students, watch students perform, and sit in on an acting class. If I hadn’t experienced what I did on my auditon day AT Elon, I most likely would have chosen a different BFA program.

I promise you that it is absolutely worth the trip. If you have any questions about the program more specifically, please feel free to send me a message. I’d love to help.

My d is auditioning at Elon this weekend. We are very excited as she has already been accepted EA. How intense is the dance audition? She heard it was really difficult. Any info would be helpful. Thanks!

Mollysmom, I pm you with our experience at Elon. I agree with the above posts, It is a great school and the audition day is well organized and filled with friendly and supportive people.

Mollysmom - My D auditioned on 2/5 and I asked her about the dance audition. Here’s her response “It was a jazz/broadway combination but the warm-ups were graded and there were across the floor exercises.” I think the dance portion lasted about an hour. It is at the end of the day and the kids walked from the arts center to the rec center for that portion. I remember they all came out sweating :)

Thanks for your info. She just got her schedule for the day and it looks like she has to sing after dance! Hope she gets a minute to breathe!

Oh, the end of the day walk was for Baldwin-Wallace audition - not Elon. Too many auditions!!! At Elon everything was in the same building. And there was a nice “holding room” for the kids/parents so they did have a chance to catch their breath and grab a bottle of water or snack in between the different activities. Break a leg!!

The Elon literature states that the audition process can take from 9:00 a.m. all the way until 9:00 p.m. for the acting auditions. Did anyone have that long of a day or do you think they are just giving themselves a buffer? We’ve seen the school and it is one of the nicest college campuses I’ve been on, the theatre facilities are great, and I’ve heard the audition process is top shelf. However they make it less convenient to audition than most of the other schools. Kids have to miss two days of school to get there. It’s nice (and necessary at some point) to sit in on a class, interact with students and professors, but it is expensive to drive hundreds of miles and spend two nights in a hotel, which is why every other school makes it easy to audition in one city. This is a field where kids have to put the cart before the horse and often apply and audition before seeing a school. Some part of me admires them for sticking to their guns on this, but I think they lose out on some great students by not making it more convenient.
