I was wondering if anyone is applying to Elon's BFA or BA theater program this year and of you have any info on it. It looks like a school my S might like. I did read that you have to audition on campus, which is sort of a drawback. Do you know if you don't get in the BFA program if you can go into the BA program or are you rejected from the school if you are rejected from the BFA program? I know quite a few kids from our HS that are over the moon about that school.

You can be accepted to the school and not the program. You can do a BA if your rejected from the BFA. My daughter auditioned at Elon and it was the wrong school for her for a whole bunch of reasons, but I’d be careful about plans to do the BA if the BFA doesn’t work unless your child is really comfortable with that option. At that point you’re attending a school that rejected you based on your audition and that might be tough to live with for some kids. Good luck!

Good point flossy:-) I will take note of that. Right now he isn’t committed whole-heartedly to a BFA program, so trying to find schools where he might be just as happy with a BA in theater. He is a strong student and actually likes academics as well as he likes theater, so just trying to make an a good list of both types of schools. DePaul is another school he would like even if doesn’t make the BFA cut.

It certainly doesn’t hurt to try for the programs with the 2 for 1 approach – if not BFA, then BA – but I think you’d really have to do your homework on the resources devoted to each. We’ve seen lots of posts here about liberal arts schools with pretty well funded BA theater programs with good opportunites for students. If a school is spending money towards facilities and teaching towards a BFA program, I would think it would be pretty hard for a school to also have a BA program to match what it is offered by schools that only have a BA program.

5boys maybe check out Goucher. I think it could be a safety for your son. And did you post that he liked Oxy? Also did you mention Skidmore already? I have read that Goucher can give good merit aid for talent and stats. I plan on visiting this winter with my son. I’ll keep you posted. We are hoping to get to Occidental this winter too. Is your son willing to go to school in any state? Three more ideas would be Denison, Oberlin, and Kenyon. I know Times3 already mentioned Kenyon. It’s not right for my son but if I was going to school I’d be there in a second.

All the schools mentioned have BA’s. Another school my son has been in contact with and is impressed with the communication is Fordham. He asked if he could be an acting BA major and minor in Pre-law. They said that there is no Pre-Law minor but they would design a track for him with classes that would ready him for an advanced degree in law.

5Boys - Unless they’ve changed their policy within the past year, DePaul, like NYU, only allows students to apply to one one undergraduate school at a time, and so your son would not be able to consider another department if rejected by the Theatre School. Fordham-Lincoln Center will accept students academically, even if they do not admit them as Theater Performance majors. American University requires auditions for Acting and Musical Theater majors, but students may audition any time from the spring of senior year (following admission) until their sophomore year. AU has excellent law-related majors.

shacherry… My S really liked Oxy… right nowit as at the top of his list…but he has only seen 3 schools so far…LOL…It seemed like an amazing place for kids who are into the arts but want to double major in something else. The campus is stunning and it has a great location in Pasadena, which is close to all that LA has to offer. There were tons of singing opportunities…i.e. GLEE club. This is really important to my S.

Anyway, I think he has some pretty good safety/match schools on his tentative list. #1 is Muhlenberg… where based on his HS"s naviance should be a pretty safe bet… and you can’t beat their theater program. He also has Skidmore, Connecticut College, Kenyon( which by the way sent him one of those glossy brochures and his is 100% psyched about it… I think it is a great fir for him, with their theater and writing.), Oberlin, Whitman and maybe Vassar and Wes… but I am trying to keep him away from those lottery type schools. He has stated that aesthetics are important to him…hated Pitzer’s campus, and would like to be by water if at all possible.

stagemum… Fordham is definitely on the list… great to hear that he could get into the school of he doesn’t make the theater program. I think he is going to really like it and fits most of his criteria… and I think he has a great chance of acceptance. Am I forgetting any obvious ones? We are going to Philly in March to visit friends and we are going to try to get to NYU, Fordham, Muhlenberg, Skidmore and Wes.

Besides theater, my son is interested in Classics, Physics( but not engineering), English, & writing.

5boys, I agree with what ActingDad posted in #4 and if your son opts to do a BA, to try for schools with a strong BA in Theater that don’t also have a BFA track. I think you have some really good option on his list in that regard. I don’t know your son’s qualifications but other possible ones to look at may be Brandeis or Boston College.
