First of all, congratulations to everyone accepted ED! I know how much many of you had Elon as there clear top choice.

My D applied EA and had Elon as one of her top selections. I have to admit, though, that it dropped a little on her list yesterday. She found out that one of her friends was admiited ED. This friend does not seem to even come close to the admission standards of Elon. She is in the bottom 40% of her class, had a sub 3.0 GPA with no honors or AP classes, and virtually no ec’s. She did have a pretty good ACT score, a 27, but other than that everything else seemed well below the admissions standards. There is no other hook. In fact, she had been advised by several lower ranked schools that her chance of admissions there was minimal and maybe she should consider community college. Everyone was stunned that she was admitted.

I am trying to make sense of this. This is one of D’s closest friends but she said yesterday “I am not sure that I want to go to a school that accepted her”. I can’t totally disagree but told her that Elon is still the same school that she liked on her visits.

^^can you say geographic diversity? Elon is/has been making a large push into the middle atlantic and moreso, the northeast…

also, if your HS has a decent reputation, maybe Elon is willing to take a chance on akid in a competitive environment that may (or may not) have potential given their HS experience…

just playing devil’s advocate here, of course, but again trying not to second guess admissions decisions…

edit: in terms of going to a school that would “accept her”, we ran into that ALOT two years ago with my older one and we told her the exact same thing you did; it was about fit for her, not about one kid out of 5000 who happened to get in…

^ It would not be geographic diversity. Elon is one of the most popular choices in our high school. Over 30 kids applied this year just from our school. Usually about 8-10 kids end up going.

wow…is it possible that they wanted to protect the yield with the ED app? and do you think that they have found earlier success with current Elon students/lower GPA kids from your HS in the past few years and were, therefore, more apt to take one from a school they have alot of knowledge about?

just trying to help you figure this out? what does the Naviance tell you? 30 kids? how big is the graduating class?

^graduating class is over 400. Over the last 3 years, almost 30 kids per year have applied. D’s GC told her if Elon was her first choice to apply ED since most kids from our high school apply EA or RD and this group has a much higher GPA, test scores and other credentials than the ED group. You end up competing against some of the brighest kids in the school that are using Elon as a safety unless you go ED. The difference in applicant credentials at our school between ED and EA/RD applicants are huge.

I am very happy for her friend since she is such a nice kid but I worry that she will survive.

^^that explains alot…I think a 3.0 or so kid from a top CT public would be just ok at Elon, but that’s without knowing your school…not a top kid, but will survive depending on the major, etc…obviously they did too…

btw, they should all charter a plane to get down there; where do you all fly from?; the flights we have looked at are small jets from Newark; your HS could fill the whole plane…lol

Why do you care? Interesting as it is, colleges choose students based on all different standards. Perhaps she had a great application essay. Or maybe she met someone in the admissions office and made a great impression. Speculation of that is rude and if you dont think a school is good enough because one person was let in then good luck finding a school where all of the students match the average perfectly. That would be a pretty boring school and there wouldnt be much diversity in the kids.

app: not sure if you are referring to Bobby’s comment or my response, but in my case, I care because Elon is actually on my daughter’s college list for 2011 and her stats are quite similar to the student that was accepted ( and we thought Elon was out of reach)…totally agree with your assessment though; wouldn’t want any school with only one type of kid…

That may be an exception, but I am sure Elon had their reasons. If it’s an consolation check out the stats posted of the other students accepted ED, they are all strong and well rounded applicants. I personally did not apply ED b/c it was less competitive then EA or even R. I believe my application would have had a good chance in any of these pools. I applied ED b/c I simply knew that Elon was the place for me, it had everything I was looking for in a school. Why not get in to my #1 school sooner rather than later RIGHT?! Elon is an excellent school and is getting stronger every year, please tell your daughter not to get discouraged, there are also kids getting in with 4.0s! Trust that the the admissions counselors know what they are doing! TELL HER I SAID GOOD LUCK!

Congratulations on getting into Elon. My son got in also. He and you both applied in September and both of you loved the school so much. We are so happy and I know you are too!!!

“also, if your HS has a decent reputation, maybe Elon is willing to take a chance on akid in a competitive environment that may (or may not) have potential given their HS experience…”
