My son has been accepted and plans to major in business analytics if he attends. He also is a high level dancer and wants to include a dance minor. Does anyone know how the department works for dance level placement? Is there a placement process for those students who want to dance and perform but who aren’t sending in portfolios for a major? Would he be able to participate in musicals if he isn’t a major? Any insight is very much appreciated!
Here is a short discussion from 2020 about dance for non-majors at Elon that might be helpful:
And here is an article from 2017 about non-majors participating in musicals in community theatre because opportunities for non-MT majors to participate in musicals on campus were not readily available.
Thank you for finding this info! Lots to think about as he wants to be at a school where he can perform. Will have him talk to the dance department.
Happy to help! He may want to reach out to Musical Theatre as well if performing in musicals is something he would also like to do.
Many schools with top dance, musical theatre, and acting programs do not allow non-majors to perform in productions and concerts, or (even if they do allow them to audition) they are rarely cast.
Some schools will have active student groups outside of the performing arts department that produce productions and concerts that are open to non-majors.
Not sure where your son is in his application process, but if you post on the Musical Theatre majors and Dance majors forums here on CC some posters may be able to recommend schools with robust opportunities for non-majors.
He’s already made his list. Business is primary, but the ability to dance is very important. Wake offers merit scholarships for non majors willing to commit to participating in the arts. And some allow you to send in an arts supplement and allow dance department input on your acceptance. Have to see where the chips fall!
