My son has been accepted for the fall and is interested in the dual degree engineering program and also learned about the new engineering program where all 4 years are completed at Elon. Does anyone have an idea of how well engineering graduates do when it comes to finding jobs in their field, internships, etc.?
According to Elon’s website, their in-house engineering program is not yet ABET accredited. While ABET normally retroactively accredits degrees that were issued prior to accreditation, I recommend one attend a currently accredited school. Many engineering positions, particularly those in federal and state government, public utilities, and those for which Professional Engineer (PE) licensure is required, and many private employers typically require the applicant to have graduated from an ABET accredited program. so one may be limited in their opportunities initially, until the school becomes accredited. With respect to the dual degree (most likely, a 5 year “3-2” program with the participating engineering school) program, my recommendation is to start out in engineering from the first semester if one is certain he/she wants to be an engineer, getting your BS in Engineering in four years. The additional year is overhead for which tuition and time are lost, and engineering employment will be based upon one’s engineering degree, not and additional liberal arts BA or whatever the “3” school would provide. It is my understanding that the “3-2” programs in general have low completion rates for both degrees.
