Elon Fellows

I have some questions about the Fellows program. Is it something you need to apply for each year? What if you are unsure of what your major would be end up being?

Anyone with experience of knowledge about these programs- please comment.

My S will be a Elon Fellow next year. You do need to maintain a certain GPA to stay in the program but I don’t know if it’s the same GPA for everyone in every fellows program. I don’t think most fellows have a problem with the GPA because it’s competitive to get in.

There are 6 fellows programs and 3 are major specific (Business, Communications, and Teaching) I would imagine that if you transfered your major out of a major specific fellows program then you couldn’t stay in that fellows program.

If you are unsure of your commitment to a major than you might want to compete for one of the non-major specific fellows programs (Leadership, Honors, and Elon College)

Hope that helped. Good luck… Every Fellow we met loved the program…

Hi.

Daughter is just starting the app process, and plans to apply for Elon Fellows program. However, if the dates for the Fellows Weekend are about the same as last year, she may have a conflict with a performance requirement at home – is there any opportunity for a student to do the on-campus interview, etc at a different date?

Applicants for the fellows programs (as I recall) are not required to attend fellows weekend… It’s a great time to meet current fellows and other potential fellows. The current fellows and selected professors conduct interviews together on that weekend but everyone knows that it takes years for your student to become who they are and no one is disqualified because they can’t attend. Hope that helps… (wow it was ages ago that I posted on this thread)… Son loves Elon…

For those prospective high school students considering applying for one of the Fellows
the following information (which reflects the class of 2014) may be useful:

Fellows Programs: No. in Program Average GPA Average SAT*

Business 24 4.5 1998
Communications 30 4.4 2033

Teaching Fellows 27 4.6 1889
*Average SAT includes Critical Reading, Math and Writing sections

Scoutmom – do you know the number of kids invited to compete for the various programs (esp Honors and Elon College Fellows) versus the final number admitted? (For example, do they invite 400 kids for Honors Fellow, and then cut to get to that final 40?)

I attended a local Elon event a few weeks ago. At that point my D was accepted and invited to apply for Fellows. I asked about the 2 step process. The answer I got was about 400 students are invited to Fellows weekend, but only about 200 accepted. I did not ask for a breakdown by schools. It was a little disappointing to me, but D followed through with it. Found out last night she did not make the first cut.

Last year it was posted that 1400 applied and 700 were invited to attend the Fellows weekend (TOTAL)
I don’t know the numbers for the different programs but for Leadership Fellows
500 kids applied
100 kids invited
25 were offered Leadership Fellows
5 given scholarship
5 alternates
(MY son was an alternate and was later invited to to be a Leadership Fellow)

Thanks for the info Scoutmom & all above.

ScoutMom, what do you think your son had that made them choose him for the Leadership Fellows program vs. the other applicants he was up against? Thanks,

I thought my son had a lot going for him. He was president of his high school class, very active in the school and participated in leading freshman orientation for the high school and planning and organizing religious retreats for high school students at our church. He was Team captain for the track team for two years. His High school choose him to attend two different weekend leadership conferences to represent his school.

However when he finally met the other leadership fellows he felt that what he had done and accomplished was not as interesting or impressive as many of the other fellows.
My son was originally an alternate for Fellows and after he met the other fellows he said he knew why. He thought they all had done something really different or remarkable.

Sorry I can’t remember what the other fellows did , although I do remember that one girl worked with the dolphins in Seaworld in Florida.

I was wondering what practical advantages the students really have in the Leadership or Communications Fellow programs. Are there a significant differences that translate into opportunities in these programs rather than just being at Elon in regular course of study?

Anybody know when/how students are notified if they are accepted into the Fellows program after the competition? Is there a deadline when one must accept a fellows invitation? (Since it looks like there are folks waitlisted, I’m assuming there’s a point one must decide…).

mammafrog, I was wondering the same thing.

^^ looks like initial decisions are in the end of March based on last year’s thread…alternates are notified of final decision in middle of May (based on last year’s threads)
