Elon Honors Fellows

Daughter (who will audition later in Feb) received notice that she’s been invited to compete for Elon College and Elon Honors Fellows Programs. From what we’ve read on their site, there seems to be opportunity for some scholarship aid (whoo hoo!) and honors classes. Of course, she still would have to pass the hurdle of being accepted into the MT program, but are there any current Elon Fellows who are MT majors? If so, do MT and the honors program “play nice”? Any wisdom about the competition?

Mommafrog–I also received an invitation to compete for the same two fellows programs! I have an audition in February as well.

But does anyone know if I could complete my interview and whatnot on the weekend of my audition so I don’t have to make ANOTHER 8 hour trip to ANOTHER audition of sorts with a small acceptance rate? On that note, does anyone know how difficult it is to get in?

I talked to admissions today and they were super friendly and helpful-- they said they could try to schedule a Fellows interview the day of my audition. But I’d recommend calling sooner rather than later just based on the feeling I got from them on the phone.

Yes, my daughter did her interview on a different weekend due to schedule issues, four years ago. She was chosen as an Elon college fellow, but turned it down as there was no additional scholarship money at the time (now all fellows receive an additional scholarship but that was not the case four years ago) and it seemed like a lot of extra work which we didn’t think she’d have time for (she is also a dancer and takes 2 or 3 extra dance classes every semester). In her senior class there is a girl who’s an honors fellow and a boy who’s a leadership fellow and a girl who’s a leadership fellow. I think that’s all out of her class of 21 or so (originally 28). Also Ericsmom’s son who gradutaed last year was an Elon College fellow as was a female classmate of his. It is possible to be in MT and do fellows, although obviously a lot of work! Kudos to those who do it!

Does anyone have experience with the Leadership Fellows as well? It seems that more of the events are deemed as mandatory for Leadership Fellows specifically for the Fellows weekend and we’re hearing that audition day is just so crazy for MT applicants that squeezing in both is a challenge. Are you almost sacrificing the Leadership Fellows opportunity if you skip the weekend due to standing academic/performance obligations even if you try to manage the interview as the same time as the audition?

My son did the Elon College Fellows and made it through to graduation as Magna Cum Laude in BFA MT and also with honors due to having completed the Elon College Fellows requirements. Hard work and dedication, for sure! He auditioned at Elon for MT on a different weekend from the Fellows interview weekend. It’s hard to imagine fitting them both in on the same weekend!

My understanding was that only 5 Fellows in each of the Fellow categories receive scholarship money.

shcisamax, I can only speak to the Honors Fellows and Elon College Fellows, as those are the 2 my D was invited to compete for. Honors Fellows receive $10,000 annually on top of their Presidential Scholarship. The information for Elon College Fellows states: All 50 Elon College Fellows receive scholarships valued at $3,500 annually, which are renewable annually as long as the student remains a Fellow in good standing. This is in addition to any Presidential Scholarship awarded.

The Fellows folks very kindly worked w/my d to allow her to do the competition when she was on campus for her audition. (There is only one Fellows weekend, and she’s the lead in a musical that weekend…plus the 500 miles each way made another trip daunting.) She did her interview at the beginning of her audition day (which led to an 11 hour day on campus…whew!) and they emailed the essay prompt to her when she got home.

So now she waits to see if she is accepted to the MT major and the Fellows program…
