How many finalists are selected for each program and how many receive the fellowship following the interview?
The letter said 1400 students applied, in past posts, they invite about half to Fellows Weekend for about 165 final slots. Not everyone invited attends, so it would appear you’re at about a 1-in-4 chance for a slot, although that’s assuming they over-invite the same number of people for each program.
If I am unable to attend for financial reasons and I click that I still want to be considered, is it unlikely that I would be accepted?
How would they know you are unable to attend for financial reasons at this point? But also, would you be able to attend if you successfully won one of the fellows scholarships?
@Cameron121, Sorry to hear your son didn’t get an invite. My D received the invite later this morning. We appreciate the information you shared above.
@Trusting congrats on your D getting through to the next round. I didn’t love the essay my son submitted, I think he was kinda done by early January from everything else in the process. So, not a shock to me, but he will end up with many good choices at the end of the day, so that’s all that matters in the end. Good luck to your D moving forward!
my D got invited to the weekend. living in New England it will require missing school and flights and hotels for 3. so i hope the odds are decent to justify the spend…
@cameron121 My concern is that it is a lot of money to book a round trip flight for three people, a hotel, rental car with only one month in advance. There also isn’t a guarantee that one would receive the fellowship. I also have a sibling that is finishing college this year, so currently it is a lot to ask of my parents to pay for a trip where I may not even receive any money in the long run. I really want to go in March but its asking a lot from my parents financially.
Anybody know the GPA for Presidential? Method of notification?
@Makeitrain15 I’m sorry, I thought you meant that you couldn’t attend the school for financial reasons, not the weekend. There also is an element of risk because not all Fellows programs award additional money to recipients (only Honors, Elon College and Teachers are guaranteed a scholarship, the rest are only for a small subset of the program participants). So yes, it is up to you whether you think you can go down and “win” the money from the other students. You guys need to look at the risk/reward payoff, depending on which programs for which you are competing.
@vocal1046 they do not release the GPA cutoffs, you’d have to check out old threads. However, note that Elon uses a different GPA calc than most schools outside of NC, so you may have problems. As for your other question, you learn about scholarship awards when you receive your acceptance. If you didn’t apply for a Fellows program you will hear back on March 15.
Sorry, I didn’t finish my sentences above!! they do not release the GPA cutoffs, you’d have to check out old threads TO SEE STATS OF THOSE WHO RECEIVED PRESIDENTIAL SCHOLARSHIPS. However, note that Elon uses a different GPA calc than most schools outside of NC, so you may have problems COMPARING APPLES TO APPLES.
This is what happens when you get old
Unless they have changed things in the last couple of years, you are vying for more than one scholarship. SO, if you are a really strong candidate, you might get offered more than one of the scholarships. Both my son and daughter were Honors fellows at Elon. If you have really strong SAT and GPA plus leadership and EC, you are in pretty good shape. I think my daughter got all three scholarships, and took the fellows because it was the most money, plus combined with the presidential, which you automatically get, it was a good scholarship. You need to be confident of your interview skills. I believe the way they did it was you attended a “class” and wrote a paper on it. and also had interviews. Beautiful school! You DO have to attend the week end though to be considered.
You actually do not need to attend the weekend to be considered for the Fellows scholarships. There should be a button that you select to schedule an off site interview by phone or Skype if you have been invited to the Fellows weekend.
My son did receive an invitation to the Fellows weekend! I am so glad to hear that he can be considered, even if he can’t attend. I do have one question that i am hoping someone can answer. If you were invited to the Fellows weekend, are you accepted or should we assume you will be or is it still possible not to be accepted? Thank you!
Check his portal online, he should have been accepted.
Thank you Cameron121. Hi portal didn’t show anything. I actually called the admissions office and the she told me that Fellows invitees are not admitted, unless they become a Fellow. But then he got an acceptance letter via snail mail! Go figure. Maybe the person answering the phone was a student. Thanks again.
Does anyone have examples of past essay prompts from the weekend?
Has anyone heard yet from the Fellows program? I thought midnight last night would show something but I don’t see anything!
