Is anyone familiar with Elon University in North Carolina? Is it just a "country club" or is it as good as Newsweek indicates with it's "up and coming" programs? Thanks.

My son liked it well enough to apply ED, and is really looking forward to attending. He definitely does not fit the "country club" mold, and while the prevalence of Greek life is a bit concerning, the school seems large enough that many more options exist. The kids I saw on Spring Orientation weekend looked like a fairly electic mix (but they still need to work on racial diversity). There's an Elon forum over in the colleges section that has a lot of threads on various topics.

My daughter is a junior there and has been very happy. She is definitely not a "country club" type, although there are plenty of wealthy kids there. Greek life seems to be strong, but she did not choose to go that route and she has a nice group of friends from various parts of the country. She spent a term abroad in Ireland and she loved that. She enjoys her classes and has great things to say about her professors.

Thank you both very much! Being a more liberal-State resident, there is a concern for "fitting in"....

It was a strong second when my daughter was deciding what college to attend. She's a liberal, vegetarian from the Northeast, not inclined to partying and loves travel abroad. We both thought that she wouldn't have any trouble fitting in at Elon. I think that an awful lot of their oos students come from the mid-atlantic states.

My daughter is just finishing up her freshman year and really loves Elon (except for chemistry). She is not greek, and has friends that are and aren't. I don't think being a "liberal" will be a problem; my daughter is pretty conservative, but it seems all of her close friends are liberal. She has no problem finding things to do on weekends (we did let her take a car after Christmas, but before that, she had no problem getting rides anywhere). Good lluck on your decision; it all comes down to where you feel the most comfortable.

We visited Elon for Fellows weekend and we were all impressed. the campus is beautiful and walkable, and all the kids seemed frienly and enthusiastic. DD enjoyed a presentation on internship opportunities and really clicked with the kids at the Honors program reception. Elon came in second in our college search, but only after a lot of agonizing. You should be aware that Elon is in a VERY small town, with few esblishments within walking distance of campus. Carpooling evidently solves this problem for a lot of kids. If you want a medium-sized school, especially for communications or musical theater, you should give Elon a look. I believe our neighbor will be attending there in the fall to pursue a psychology degree.

Thank you! I forgot to mention that this is for a Business (accounting) Degree...any ideas on job fairs, placement, internships, etc.?
