Elon versus College of Charleston

D is interested in both CofC and Elon. Right now she is leaning toward a Int'l Studies major. Charleston as a place to live for 4 years is a big plus but she hasn't visited either yet (she will this winter). Anyone able to compare the academics/campus life/Int'l Studies programs? The cost for OS is comparable so that isn't a deciding factor.

…Anyone?

Both good schools. Elon is private and small. Charleston is public and larger. Charleston is urban, but in a nice city. Though the beach can be a distraction. Both popular southern schools.

Athletics at both schools is strong, but Elon also has football.

Academically it depends on the programs and who you ask. I rate Elon a touch higher. Its getting hard to get into. Its a fairly hot school with many coming down from the NorthEast.

Elon has a very high percentage of students who go abroad for a semester or year. They push that. Elon students are known to be hard workers and get good internships.

But there is nothing wrong with Charleston.

Good luck

Elon is well respected in the northeast and its reputation is getting better and better. I am not familiar with Charleston.

Something to keep in mind is that generally out of state students at public schools won’t get as good financial aid offers at in-state students.

Campus life wise, Charleston is majority female, which is something to keep in mind as far as dating may go. Elon is very much dominated by Greek life socially. Yes Elon has football, but basketball at Charleston is a good substitute as far as getting students excited about athletics.

Burlington is nice, but it’s very suburban, it’s certainly no Charleston. Most of the action around Elon is in Greensboro. If she values diversity, Charleston has a slight advantage, but it’s very slight. Elon has more geographic diversity and more international students.

Their both good schools academically. Elon is more selective, but Charleston is a good school nonetheless. It should really come down to where she feels more comfortable when she visits.

I would also look @ rollins college and hendrix college too! I only know of elon from seeing people with elon t shirts on in the airport in north carolina. college of charleston is a great school, elon (I do not know) I do know it has a rep as a school for rich kids who like to party. (reps often times are not fair or true)

Can anyone give me feedback on the Int’l Studies major at Elon and CofC or suggest other small to midsize schools for B student with good test scores (sat: 1970) and good ECs?

The only way you’re going to get answers on that which aren’t complete conjecture is to find people on CC who have been through the programs (which is rather unlikely) or contact the schools (who are usually pretty willing to answer questions from prospective students)

And without more specific criteria, I could list off mid-sized, B-student colleges until the cows come home. If she’s specifically interested in the South, High Point University would be a good option. It combines the urban location aspects of Charleston with the more open, green campus of Elon.

I have been to both schools and absolutely loved Charleston. If it wasn’t for the girl to guy ratio (and not having my daughter’s major), I know it would be at the top of her list…but then again we were never looking for suberbia…

Has anyone been in or know about either school’s Int’l Studies major?
