So my college decision comes down to these 2 schools because they are what I can afford...now I know that people may be wondering what is the common thread here? Well I was applying to schools with good communications/business schools.

I know Elon is small and UMD is huge but I feel like I would be comfortable with both class environments.

Does anyone know if UMD is better than Elon academically?

I know more about UMD than Elon, so any insight about Elon would be helpful.

Elon is actually considered a very up-and-coming school. It’s beautiful. When I visited, I fell in love. But I’m only a junior now. Elon is awesome because it’s small but not small enough that it feels like high school. They’re huge on study abroad which is awesome. Their colleges of business and communication are both gaining a lot of recognition. Education is good, too. Everyone I know who has enrolled at Elon loves it. Have you visited? If you haven’t, you should. It’s gorgeous and I guarantee you’ll feel at home. I did.

Elon has placed its communications graduates at major networks like CNN and also at prestigious newspapers like the New York Times. Also some of Saturday Night Live’s writers are Elon graduates.

Elon students are known not only for their intelligence but their character and work ethic. They roll up their sleeves and get to work and get involved in community. Its a superb school and their administration is fabulous. Very warm and supportive people.

Maryland is an outstanding state flagship. Nothing wrong with it at all. Strong programs. But yes its bureaucratic, political and huge. But a very good school.

Most business students and many communications students go onto get their MBA. Here is what you can do, go to Elon for undergrad and Maryland MBA.

Hope that helps. Good luck.

1st of all, I’ll admit that I think Elon is a wonderful school in almost every way, but from other posts I recall you wanted a large school. And because your in state for UMD the costs are about $12k more per year at Elon.

UMD $17,500

Elon 33,700 (less 4k pres scholarship) $29,700

That said, I still like Elon better but I don’t know if you will…

I think you owe it to yourself to go see Elon because it’s a great opportunity but I could not recommend it to you unless you spend some time on campus because it’s very different to what you thought you wanted.

Good Luck

thanks for the insight everyone! im finally visiting Elon this week =]
