Email accounts activated!

For those of you who don't keep up with the Facebook group, you can now activate your Andrew accounts here:

You can also set your CMU Name so you can have a @cmu.edu address here:

https://www.cmu.edu/myandrew

I have the student ID that came in the decision letter, but where do I find the Andrew ID? Do I have to make my deposit first?

Yes, you need to make your deposit first.

is it just me or is there an error when trying to activate the account

If you have an andrew account, you should be able to ssh into unix.andrew.cmu.edu . CMU has a nice network; have fun exploring it. Check out the "finger" command and I think another good one is "movie" or "movies".

neat! is there a list of these somewhere?

So I sent in the deposit, but I can't find my andrew ID on the welcome packet.

awvvu, where was yours?

Log into the "now that I'm enrolled page". Your andrew ID should be there.

I remember back when you needed a college e-mail account to get a facebook, so everyone would be rushing to register on facebook as soon as they got their college e-mail address activated.

Actually, I also remember a time before facebook. Such peaceful times. :(

Sorry for asking this (but i am a newb), what does "able to ssh into unix.andrew.cmu.edu" mean?

It means you can open up a shell (command line) through a secure connection to the computer at unix.andrew.cmu.edu.

Don't worry about it. It's just a toy for nerds. You'll learn it soon enough when you have to use the network from home, or you may never really learn about ssh if you don't need it (see: art majors). For the rest of you nerds: sftp unix.andrew.cmu.edu is also fun and actually useful for backing up your files.

Also, learn how to publish your webpage!

Make a /www directory on your andrew webspace then access it via: http://www.contrib.andrew.cmu.edu/~andrewID It's a space maintained by the CMU computer club and makes it so you don't have to go through the annoyance of publishing your webpage like you would through the CMU servers.
