email address after switching to google

I'm still using only mail.ucla.edu as my ucla email, but I have a question about switching to g.ucla.edu

Will my current address of uclacee@ucla.edu/email still be valid after I switch to g.ucla.edu, or will I have to use a different address?

bringing this up…

When you switch your email to the g.ucla.edu domain, then all emails that would be sent to your @ucla.edu email will simply be forwarded to your g.ucla.edu email.

You won’t be able to log in to your @ucla.edu email after a certain period of time though because it will be deactivated eventually.

is it okay to not switch?

If you don’t switch and transfer all your content to your g.ucla.edu account, then your original @ucla.edu account will be deactivated/deleted and you will lose all content and will have no access to it any longer.

The @ucla.edu is suppose to be for current students only. The g.ucla.edu is for alumni. You cannot use the @ucla.edu forever. Mine expired about 6 months after I graduated.

Here’s the deal with email (I activated Google Apps a couple months ago and I graduated over a year ago):

Google Apps for UCLA is available for students and alumni (and retirees). If you’re in any of those groups, activating Google Apps will create a new account: <username>@g.ucla.edu. Within 2-3 days of activating, you will be able to send and receive email as <username>@ucla.edu through the Gmail interface. In fact, this will automatically become the default account for sending email without you having to do anything.</username></username>

If you graduate without activating Google Apps first, then you have the option of activating Google Apps, or turning on lifetime email forwarding to an account of your choice. I think Google Apps is the better choice because then you can send as your <username>@ucla.edu address, but here’s the link for forwarding: https://www.bol.ucla.edu/cgi-ssl/accounts/setforward</a></username></p></li>

You still have access to your BOL email for about a month after activating Google Apps. There are instructions at g.ucla.edu about how you would go about transferring your email.

You can send as <username>@ucla.edu on your mobile device after activating Google Apps. g.ucla.edu has instructions for that, too.</username>

All of the above statements are true regardless of whether you’re a student or an alumnus.

UCLA did a (surprisingly) good job of setting up an FAQ for all of this; I recommend taking a look at it.
