<p>Student can choose their own email address. Many do have first initial and last name, but sometimes that address is already taken.</p>

<p>You can search by last name and can chose to narrow your search for only students, only faculty, only staff, or all.</p>
<p>I just reread your post and saw that the person you are looking for has graduated. I don't think you will find him/her in the directory. If you send the email to James Smith, the address might be <a href="mailto:jsmith@email.unc.edu">jsmith@email.unc.edu</a>, but he may have decided on a different email. I also believe the older email addresses were different. I know my daughter has her first and middle initial plus last name as there was already someone with first initial and last name.</p>
