this is hellllaaa random...i got regents/chancellors from berkeley but got no leadership or alumni e-mail. I didnt get regents from UCLA either or an alumni mail...***...
anyways...as far as i know, regents is the only one of these that indicates admission, rest all is purely random

Someone that I know who has no leadership at school got the e-mail as well so I definitely know it's random now.

I also got the e-mail for a second time.

It's not that random. The fact that you don't have any leadership does not mean that the email is random. It means you are in the top of the pool at UCB/UCLA to receive these emails. Don't forget a lot of people just apply to these campus without even qualifying. On the UCLA forum, someone said they called UCLA admission and only the top 30%(something like that) of the application pool receives the UCLA Alumni email. These 2 campuses are now done with the prelimary review.

ucadmissions: Freshman Application Review Completed

So if we got this letter, it means that we are somewhat advantaged (not to the point of guaranteed admission)?

I did not get the email. Likely rejection for me then? Because that does not seem like a good sign...

I think it is completely random. Why would they have the disclaimer in bold if it is a sign of advantage?

The Berkeley Alumni email goes to every student in the database whose email address was accurately entered. Any one can apply-it's up to you to to prove why you are a ;eader- classicly or unusually. It is a great scholarship and worth the trouble to apply- a vastly better use of time than anything on fastweb

A lot of my friends did not receive this e-mail. I found out that my friend got an e-mail from my counselor who sends out scholarship bulletins and listed another alumni scholarship in the bulletin and was not invited to this one. This scholarships (leadership award) wasn't listed on our school's bulletin.

I've asked around and no one has received this or even know what I'm talking about.

I spoke with a lady in the admissions office yesterday, and she stated that although it is NOT a guarantee of admission by any means, the email is based off of GPA; the try to target the top tier of applicants. So not everyone receives it, only their "target" applicants I guess, though again, I know people in the past who have received it but not been admitted. As far as the 'idiots,' either they arent as stupid as you think they are, or there's something on their app that caught the eye of the scholarship people. Anywho, just thought I'd report that...

Quote from the UCLA Alumni thread below

I'm sure it's not totally random.

I've checked my D's UC application and she did mark leadership scholarship section, this may be one reason why she received this email.

OT, Did anybody receive the financial aid email from UCB?

Yes, and I later got the same thing from UCSC.

Dear Prospective Berkeley Student,

UC Berkeley’s California Alumni Association would like to invite you to apply for the Leadership Award Alumni Scholarship. The Leadership Award is merit-based and awards students who have taken leadership roles in their schools and communities. Scholarships are worth up to $12,500 over five years. It is one of the most prestigious scholarships at UC Berkeley.

so that's the one that I got. It was sent to me twice... is this the random email? and sorry I'm a bit confused about this, but can I recieve the scholarship without being admitted to the school? and how many people recieve this scholarship? Also, last question I promise.. Is it strange that I did not recieve an email like this from uc but from berkeley?

thanks.. honestly, I thought I had no chance of admission. But I'd just like to know if this is a good sign.

Thanks!

Yeah, that's the one that anybody's open to apply for. It doesn't say anything about your chances of getting in. :/

It is a semi-random email regarding a scholarship open to all applicants. You will find out whether you got into Berkeley about April 1, you will find out about the Alumni scholarship at the end of April. They do not award them until you are in, they try to award them before May 1 deadlines, but some interviewers in some regions may run behind, not every one finds out before May 1.

Any and every one of you should apply, if you don't have traditional leadership- student body president, then think about where you do lead in life, this is Berkeley, guys, they look creatively not just at the perfect resume'

^^ Berkeley sends out decisions on March 27th.

Sorry, it was March 31/April 1 our year (so it came up around 5pm on March 31)

Berkeley alumni scholarship notifications go out to everyone. UCLA screens their applicants first.

^Good to know that.

should you apply for the alumni scholarship even if you're interviewing for regents?

Yes, apply for everything, you don't know what you will get

The Cal link said the Alumni scholarship was $1500 for one year (money must be tight). It would be more approriate for acceptances to be issued first before asking applicants to fill out more paperwork. Since the award is so small, maybe more students will partake in the money pie.
