Email from Berkeley for rec letters?

A lot of my friends received an email from Berkeley asking of rec letters. I know this is a new policy that Berkeley is trying this year. Their website says that “some” applicants will be selected to send rec letters but those who aren’t selected are not at a disadvantage. i didn’t get the email and I’m kind of worried. Why do some people get the email and some don’t? Am I being outright rejected?

There is another thread with many posts talking about the LOR’s. I suggest you scan it for more information. Since this is new for UCB, there is no definitive reason(s) that applicants are being asked or not asked for LOR’s. Depending upon your Stats/Essay/EC’s maybe you are a definitive acceptance and they do not need any more information.
