email from berkeley

Hi,

I got the an email from berkeley, i found a thread http://www.collegeconfidential.com/cgi-bin/discus/show.cgi?5/48597
but its last years…

so im wondering if anyone this year has gotten the same email?
This is the email:

Thank you for applying to UC Berkeley for the fall semester 2004! We are writing to request that you provide us with additional information by filling out an on-line questionnaire.

Each year during our application review process, we ask a small number of applicants to supplement their application information. Our goal is to learn more about your personal circumstances, your academic experiences, and your extracurricular involvement and level of achievement.

Please go to MyBerkeleyApp to access the questionnaire. The Supplemental Questionnaire must be completed within 10 days for us to consider this new information. The information you provide through the questionnaire is important for us to evaluate your application and it can only enhance your chance for admission to Berkeley.

In addition, you may choose to submit one letter of recommendation from a teacher, outreach program staff, counselor, coach, or anyone familiar with your academic and personal background. Please tell your recommender to fill out the on-line form at. The Recommendation form must also be submitted within 10 business days to be considered in the admission process.

anyone else get this email? or know why i got it?

there are 13 questions on the link they gave and they ask for the grades for fall semester

I haven't got the e-mail (assuming it will come soon) but I found the questionaire on the status page. I think everyone who applied will get it. I gives you a cance to explain if you were underprivileged in some way or had valid reasons for not performing well in school.

I didnt get any email like this.....

lindsaylu : where did you find the questionnaire.... i mean... which status page?

the MyBerkeleyApp page

hmm.... I don't have any questionnaire on MyBerkeleyApp page.....

What type of questions have they asked ?

I think you will have a questionaire too eventually.

Here are the questions:
1. Does your high school provide adequate educational resources (such as teachers, counselors, assistance with course selection and college admission planning, books, facilities, size and location)? If not, please explain.
2. Did you have a desire to take more advanced college preparatory courses offered at your school? If yes, please describe what prevented you.
3. Are you required to complete non-academic courses or courses that do not meet the UC a-g requirements (e.g.: academy, magnet, AVID, religion, leadership, or any other special program classes)? If yes, please explain.
4. How much did your teachers or counselors encourage you to take courses that would qualify you for UC or other four-year colleges?
Please rank from 1 to 5 , where 1 = Not At All, and 5 = Very Much
Please explain.
5. How much did your parents encourage or help you to prepare for a four-year college?
Please rank from 1 to 5 , where 1 = Not At All, and 5 = Very Much
Please explain.
6. Are any of/most of your friends applying to a four-year college or university?
7. How much did your friends influence your decision to apply to a four-year college or university?
Please rank from 1 to 5 , where 1 = Not At All, and 5 = Very Much
Please explain.
8. Do you have an adequate workspace at home to study? If not, please explain.

How many hours do you spend doing homework and/or studying each day?

Are there any personal circumstances that may have affected your ability to achieve academically (such as working, family responsibilities, etc.)?

Do you work? (If not, skip to question 12.) Why do you work? What days of the week and how many hours per day do you work? How long have you been working? Has working had a positive or negative effect on your academic achievement?

If you were involved in an academic outreach program (EAOP, MESA, Talent Search, Puente, Upward Bound, AVID, etc.) during high school, explain your level of involvement and what you gained from your participation. How did your involvement affect your academic achievement?

What have you done to make your school or community a better place?

Fall Grades and Spring Classes:
First list all of your fall classes and grades. Then list all of your spring classes.

at the bottom there is a box to check if you wish to submit a recommendation

hm, i didn't get the email either. i'm assuming that UC meant "fall semester 2005" in their letter, though.

oh yeah its 2005, i copy pasted the letter from the old thread (link that i posted) as i just closed my email program

There is an email with questions similar to this, but regarding a learning disability, that my daughter received. She had made reference to the LD in one of her essays, but in the email they say you can choose to have it considered or not- she said not, so we did not answer the questions. I think the one above is either due to to somethign you said in your essays or some other way they perceive you may be on a track that did not give you as many advantages as other college-prep kids and they want to consider everything in their decision.

that would make sense...trying to figure out what I included on my app

Ok, it is probably because I discussed financial issues on part of my application and my crazy family of addicts. Question: should I ask my teacher who has done all my other recs to do this one as well, or just let it be?

No recommendations have been submitted to the UCs, so have your very best person do the online recommendation form- they can cut & paste their letter & also answer questions

Not all applicants will receive this - only " a small number" as the letter says. This is a way of giving the applicant a chance to clarify or explain anything they might need to make a final decision.

I guess I won't get one since I'm not instate

I received one and I am oos. (NY)

rk:

how do your stats look in comparison to UCB's 50% range? Most of these questions appear like opportunities to explain away stuff on your transcript (not rigorous curriculum?), inconsidtent grades?, hs class competition (few apply to 4 yr?), and or test scores. The way I read it, is that they want to give U as much chance to shine in the adcom mtg. Go for it.

Well since no one's replying, for anyone who got the e-mail from Berk, post your stats. I want to know what kind of students got these e-mails, since I got one too.
