Email from Viterbi

Did all of you Viterbi applicants receive this email?

Dear ******,

I hope your senior year is going well! I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for working with us throughout the application process and applying to the USC Viterbi School of Engineering. My staff and I have had the pleasure of speaking with many of you whether in your area, via email or phone, and/or here on campus.

We have had the pleasure of meeting a great number of you already, and I anticipate the incoming class of 2013 to be more impressive and competitive than any year to date. With involvement in music, athletics, community service and leadership activities in addition to outstanding academics your class already appears to be a very dynamic group of unique individuals from around the world.

Our comprehensive admission file review process takes a considerable amount of time. We will be working closely with the USC Office of Admission reviewing complete applications. Be sure to watch your mail and email throughout the next few months. The university will contact you if information is missing, incomplete, or new info is needed. Admission decisions will be released no later than the beginning of April.

Sincerely,
Louise A. Yates
Senior Associate Dean

I got a similar email from the School of Cinematic Arts.

Nope. But I got a with a letter with similar paragraph (I can’t remember if it was from Viterbi or USC in general) in a snail mail reminder for FAFSA.

Also I haven’t been accepted yet (I applied really late). Have you?

The first letters of admission, enclosed in a large packet, will be sent out in late January for those who applied by the December 1 merit scholarship deadline and are invited to interview for the highly competitive Stamps, Mork, Trustee and Presidential Scholarships. Packets are sent USPS.

The Office of Admissions sent out letters of admission in late March last year. All students should receive notification of admission or regret by April 1.

If any of you move, please notify the admissions office of your change of address.

Last year USC received more applications than any other private university in the U.S.

@LonelyHapax, I haven’t. I wanted to find out if this email meant anything.

@Georgia Girl, what do you think about the email? Does it mean anything?

As you know I am not on the USC staff, but one of the volunteers here. All I can do is make a guess based on previous experience on the board.

This is my guess. The holidays are over and students are now focused on college admission information. My guess is the university wishes to keep in contact with potential students as they wait for the admission committee’s decision. If the number of applicants is similar to last year the committee members are considering 46,000± essays, transcripts, grades and other factors. I did speak personally to admission representatives in the past. They assured me EVERY application is read…every word. One individual noted an essay submitted was written completely in text message “language”.

I think these letters are probably to reassure seniors their forms are being considered and the decision process is moving forward.

In about two weeks the first packets should arrive.

I received it on Dec 19th and submitted my application before Dec 1st. Does it make a difference?

Also (if it’s relevant), I’m an international student.

We got letter from Viterbi at same time, it doesn’t mean anything. As mentioned, its just a checking in letter to make you feel warm and fuzzy and not forgotten. No positive or negative connotations, but nice they keep in touch (unless of course you are totally stressed out by any mail at this point).

I got several make-you-feel-not-forgotten letters. It doesn’t look the same. This one is weird.

I don’t see the difference and I think you are reading way too much between the lines. It’s a “got your stuff, see you applied to engineering letter,” that’s all. There’s no secret code in there.

D is a good student, likely a NMS finalist, and applying to USC. We need to plan some family events and want to avoid any potential schedule conflicts with possible interview dates for USC’s Mork/Trustee/Presidential/etc. Scholarship.

Does anyone know either this or past years’ dates for these interviews?

Thanks in advance.

^ Can’t hurt to be optimistic, but please don’t be angry if an invitation does not arrive. If accepted, NMF receive a NMF Presidential without an interview.
Trustee/Mork dates:

  1. 2/25/13 - 2/26/13
  2. 2/28/13 - 3/01/13
    Presidential dates:
  3. 3/04/13 - 3/05/13
  4. 3/07/13 - 3/08/13
  5. 3/11/13 - 3/12/13

OP, the letter means you submitted an application.

@alamemom,

Thank you so much. We know it’s a long shot, but we are a little hopeful since somewhere online we saw her 234 PSAT (in CA) might qualify her to be a finalist. (and that she has to put USC as the first choice on some form that comes with it.).

Excuse me, but what did you mean when you said, “OP, the letter means you submitted an application.” She did turn in her application to USC by the Dec. 1 deadline, but what does the “letter” refer to?

Thanks.

It’s the letter that started this post, read the first post (OP).

Thatwaszen (love the nom), congratulations to your D on her very high PSAT score. She seems very likely as a NMF, and that means an automatic 1/2 tuition/4 year Presidential to USC, should she be admitted. However, there is a chance she may also get an invitation to interview for another scholarship. When that happens, the students are notified at the end of January and come for interviews in Feb. But even if she does not get that early admissions packet/invite, her NMF earns her USC’s second highest merit award and no interview needed. Best of luck to her.

If I got a rejection for the main scholarships but it said still considered for others does that mean I am admitted and just have not gotten the packet?

It means you are still being considered for admission and the smaller scholarships and that you will receive a decision regarding acceptance by April 1st.
