Emailing HLS -- is this a stupid question?

I am currently a UK undergrad, and hoping to apply to US law schools next year (mostly Ivies). Unfortunately, bad stuff happenned in the family, I didn’t get a First, and only ended up with a mid to solid 2.1 this year. I see this as a massive problem, because I have seen a good 2.1 converted into a 3.8 GPA but I also saw it converted into a 3.3 in different places. Clearly, there is no point applying to schools like Harvard or Yale with a 3.3, so I thought that I would directly message them and ask how they consider applications from UK uni graduates (e.g. what kind of grades previously addmitted people have gotten).

Do you think I’d look stupid if I asked? If they convert my grades to a 3.3, I might give up on applying to US schools altogether, so it’s kind of a big deal and I really need an answer, but I don’t want to look like an idiot before I even apply either…

the answer that they will always give you is that they have no hard GPA or LSAT cutoffs.

You are more likely to get a good sense from other internationals who have applied by searching on Top Law Schools.

Oh, don’t worry; I obviously wouldn’t say ‘tell me or I won’t apply’. More like: ‘how exactly does your conversion system work, because I know that you use one but there is nothing on it anywhere online’.

And unfortunately I have dug through pages and pages of forums in recent weeks and I still came across massive discrepancies between what people say. Plus, a lot of it is purely speculative :frowning:

Don’t email them. Just apply if you think that you might get in.

You could take to UK alumni of those law schools who are in the UK, UK students currently at those law schools, etc.–they would all likely be helpful. The admissions office probably doesn’t want to get bothered and isn’t looking to do things for you, at least not yet.

My GPA put me in the top 1% of students at my university (which was a top-10 liberal arts college, but probably around the top 30 if universities and colleges were all ranked together), and I had an LSAT score at the HYS median, and I just barely squeaked into the only one of those 3 schools that I applied to. Top 10% wouldn’t suffice.
