emailing professors (showing interest)

i am interested in the Cognitive Science program at Rice, and I'd like to email a professor to express my interest. I'd like to ask them how to prepare for a Cognitive Science program, at Rice or otherwise, to express my interest and also use his or her advice to prepare myself for college because I plan on majoring in this field. I haven't taken many courses that pertain to the interdisciplinary major that is Cognitive Science (I'm taking AP Psych next year, but that's about it), so I actually do need some advice.

Does this seem like an odd email to send? I am asking genuine questions. This is not just an email to show my interest, but I'm worried about sending it because I don't want it to seem like it's just a way to get Rice's attention.

A few things

 1. You don’t apply to the program itself. You can indicate your major on the application, but that is non-binding. Not taking cog. sci related classes will not affect your chance of admission
 2. If you have an interest, you can email the professor. Perhaps indicate an interest in his/her field and that you would like to do UG research with them (if applicable).

There isn’t really anything you need to ‘prepare’ for the major. That said, opening a channel of discussion about cog. sci. can not hurt and can help you start research shortly after joining Rice.

Maybe “prepare” was the wrong word. I just want to learn as much as I can before actually going to college. Hopefully the professor I email can help me out and show me what to do. Thanks Antarius!

There is “nothing” to do, specific to a major. Yes, you need to work hard in school and on your standardized tests, etc, so that you are accepted to Rice. If you choose to do some research that is another thing that will help in admissions, but there is nothing specifically to do to prepare for any particular major. You can read if all else fails, just so you have some background knowledge.

As crazymomster says, there really isn’t anything to learn involving admission. You can still email them to discuss research, cognitive science and your interests though.
