Is everyone that applied to NMH getting emails from various people on the faculty? I dont want to read anything into it but we are getting calls and emails on an almost daily basis from vaious department people at the school. Is that typical for their process?

I was getting emails from departments, and a personal email from my interviewer, which I found very nice.

emails from departments,
calls overseas from students at NMH,
personal email from a coach?

hmm, the only thing I got were those emails they send out to everyone else–

What is that supposed to mean??

what were the personal emails/ phone calls about?
Maybe they just needed more info?

We keep getting them. The latest from the English Department…we never filled out an app, took a tour, had an interview or expressed any interest directly to the school. WE NEVER APPLIED! Where did they get our info?

nylecoj007- if you filled out an inquiry form, you get those emails.
tigermax- the student just called to ask if i had any questions about the school, and
the personal emails were from coaches of sports that i expressed interest in at the open house.

Here’s my theory. NMH, like all schools, is concerned about its rankings. It is a superior school that aspires to be among the very elite. The size of its student body, however, make one important ranking look unfavorable. That is, selectivity. NMH has a student body of 600 students. Other schools, say Middlesex (for example), have a student body not much more than half its size. So if each gets 1000 applicants, NMH takes a far greater % to fill its class. So, to combat this, NMH is very aggressive in recruiting students to at least apply.

How many PG’s per year does it accept?

My son got accepted by NMH, Tabor an Wyoming Seminary. Which one should we accept? Academically?

Today was an NMH revisit day - about the fourth one - and lots of people showed up. LOTS. Looks like NMH is having a good recruitment season.

Admins looked a bit nervous in February, but there seems to be a lighter spirit these days.

My D/s and I just watched the parade of BMWs and Audis and Cadies (and Vermont- plate priuses) pull in. Maybe just a quirk, maybe a trend? Something is going right at NMH.

Just got back from helping during the revisit days on Thursday and Friday. Hubby and I did the meet and greet with the parents of prospective students, son toured around students and we ate lunch with parents. I was surprised by how many were already committed to enrolling in NMH and just bring dad along to see the campus. About 2/3 of the parents I talked to said the decision had already been made – or it was son/daughter’s first choice. We even had a few kids who got into Exeter/Andover who were thinking NMH was a better fit – and parents agreeing. Nice to see – it will be interesting to see how it pans out in the fall and how many kids are in the freshman class.

In fact I paid the deposit to NMH, and will turn down the rest. I did not visit campus cos I am from HK.

Welcome more info from those who had conducted campus revisit.

I fact I have a list of questions to ask (could be minor and silly one), for instance

1) when should I or bring my son (Grade 10) in August (what exact date)?
2) What stuff should I prepare for him
3) how much monthly expenses should I give him (considering that I am thousands of miles away).
4) If we bring everthing there, does he need to bring all stuff home during summer holiday?
5) What to do in the Thanks Giving holidays when he has to stay off campus but too short the holidays to go home (HK).
…

I didn’t even fully apply, I just inquired and I got an amazing phonecall and alot of personal attention. I really wish that I applied there… Like I would pick it over alot of “top 5” schools.

^^^ My S had same experience as IB. After S submitted the NMH preliminary application, he received several phone calls from faculty and coaches. I was impressed by NMH’s aggressive “take the bull by the horns” approach. Ultimately he chose not to apply that fine school, a decision with which I did not understand or agree. Congratulations to all the students who have elected to attend NMH next year.

hk2009 --I would be happy to answer any questions you have!

1) when should I or bring my son (Grade 10) in August (what exact date)?

The calender will be finalized in the next few weeks, so you will know the exact date to bring him. International students come a few days before the rest of the students – and get a personalized orientation to NMH and the campus. If you have the time/money to come up a few days before the orientation starts, I would suggest you do that. It will give you and your son time to rest up from the long plane ride and time to visit the local store and buy necessary items you might not want to bring from home (bed sheets, blanket, pillow, desk chair, cleaning supplies, etc). NMH has a guest cottage that many parents stay in that is a reasonable cost. If you are looking to stay in the least expensive housing, the Windmill Motel is just down the street from NMH and very inexpensive.

2) What stuff should I prepare for him

If you mean “what should he bring”, he will get a list of things to pack this summer. This link has some great suggestions: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/prep-school-admissions/668845-composite-list-what-bring-boarding-school.html Many items you will want to buy locally, due to size and weight restrictions when traveling – and he definitely won’t need all those things. Many items are a personal choice. For instance, my son absolutely loves his featherbed mattress cover – while his roommate has boxes of legos that he wouldn’t give up.

3) how much monthly expenses should I give him (considering that I am thousands of miles away)

This is an individual choice. My son uses maybe $150/semester of spending money, but he doesn’t go shopping at the mall, he doesn’t eat food at the student snack bar and he doesn’t take cabs to eat or see movies in Greenfield. But our family is very frugal and he is used to doing without – your child may be different. The cost of things like music lessons, charter bus transportation to the airport, etc are billed to his account and you will receive that bill to pay it.

4) If we bring everthing there, does he need to bring all stuff home during summer holiday?

I am not sure if there are storage options on campus for international students – but I know there is no storage for domestic students (we live in Colorado – so we have the same issue). We rented him a 5’ x 5’ storage closet at the storage place just down the street and bought him a few boxes to pack things in. The storage closet costs $100 for the summer and we are splitting the cost with at least one other student. The kids can usually get a ride from someone at the end of school to drop the boxes off in storage.

5) What to do in the Thanks Giving holidays when he has to stay off campus but too short the holidays to go home (HK).

He is welcome to come home with my son and visit Colorado:)! The international students usually go home with someone locally over the thanksgiving holidays – they also sometimes go home with other students over the long family weekends (which happen 3 times a year) but they can also stay in the dorms during the family weekends – where special trips are planned and they get to just hang out (my son also stays during long family weekends).

Tell you son that he will love NMH – it is a fantastic school!! He will join my son and a bunch of other really neat kids that are in the class of 2012. Welcome to the NMH family!!

I might have more questions to ask
