Emails to Professors

I am a senior majoring in math, and am thinking of applying to grad schools for a MS in Accountancy. I heard that when you have picked out schools, you should pick out a professor there who is doing something interesting and send an email introducing yourself and saying you would like to work together. Is this really necessary? The admissions pages never mention it.

Very necessary. Any type of (non-profesisonal) graduate degree requires a research/thesis project and supervision by a faculty member. If you have a particular area of interest, you should ensure that any school you consider has a faculty member sharing the same. Any thesis can be difficult to complete without the right supervisor.

Thanks for th quick reply.
The programs I’m considering both have an exam requirement rather than a thesis, so that won’t be an issue. Also, one is fully online. In a program like Accounting, how would I even know which prof. to contact? I don’t think these people are doing big research projects…
