Emails

I had a quick question...
has anyone signed up for a rice email account yet? Other universities make it so you can set up an account. I was wondering if the same applied to rice.

Nope! That's something you're going to do sometime during O-Week. Your advisors will help out with that. (You have to be on-campus in order to do things with Owlnet accounts.)

awwww! I was hoping to get on facebook now like the rest of my friends... =P

same here, i feel left behind since all my friends have their emails and facebook accounts already. boo

same here....

At some point during the summer after you receive your college assignment you can find yourself in the Rice website online directory (type your name in the search spot and click on "people"). I thought last year it also had email addresses, but I might be wrong... Just keep checking...

If you've been accepted AND have notified Rice of your intent to attend then you might be able to get your Owlnet account now. At one point you had to be on-campus, but you can try now at:

http://apply.rice.edu

You want an OWLNET account. You'll have to verify your status with your ID number (used in the application process -- start memorizing this now), your birthdate, full name as provided in your application, and perhaps more information.

I tried the email thing suggested but couldn't get it work. Did anybody have any success or do we do indeed have to wait?

well have to wait i guess...

does anyone know their rice id#? i'm wondering how many characers it is meant to be. i'll let you know if i get the apply.ride.edu thing to work

Rice ID numbers are generally 7 digits, with a leading zero. Sometimes, depending upon what you're using it for, there may be 8 digits with two leading zeros.

and what's a "Student Instance Number"? same thing? does it start with an S?

ALL student ID numbers now are 8 digits with leading zeros if required. (1234567 would really be 01234567.)

In most cases (including apply.rice.edu) you MUST prefix your 8-digit ID number with a capital letter 'S' (for 'student').

after bypassing the non-functioning "Continue" button and entering my info, I got "Invalid Data: The information that you entered can not be verified. This either means that the data you entered is incorrect or we have not received data about you from the Registrar/Human Resources.". Guess we wait till o-week then

what is the format for e-mails at rice? is it first initial followed by last name and then @rice.edu?

Jdog-
Thats true usually, but not always. Why don't you take a look at randon email addresses in their directory? Pick a generic name-- say Robert, and search the directory (select "people" in the search option). You'll see lots of email addresses for everyone with a first or middle name of Robert. Here, I'll give you the link http://www.rice.edu/Internet/search/query.php?search=robert&tab=People

thanks alot...

Owlnet user IDs (aka email name) can be 2-8 characters.
Valid characters are (a-z)(0-9) -- perhaps hyphen(-) and underscore(_) but I'm not certain. I believe they must begin with a letter.

There are no other formal requirements (e.g. first initial, full last name) but YOU CANNOT CHANGE YOUR LOGIN ID. Once you pick it, it's yours for as long as you're at Rice. Keep that in mind because you'll eventually put this on resumes when trying to get internships/jobs.

I knew a guy who picked "yourmom@rice.edu" -- which was really funny until he wanted a job and had to get a different account somewhere with a more respectable username. :-)
