EMAP Program

Son received an email today about a summer math enrichment program. Have any current students attended this?

I am confused, because the email says the program lasts 2 and a half weeks, whereas the link says the program is a five week program.

Anyone have any info on this?

There is a fee, but it is residential and has coursework and field trips. Think it’s a great idea for kids who think they want to do engineering but not sure.

Maybe it’s an older kid’s version of the SITE program?

Any info on it would be great.

Thanks

I’m not sure what that is. http://emap.ua.edu/

It looks like the website hasn’t been updated. This is last year’s form and info.

EMAP is basically a summer session which tries to get an engineering student ahead in math and things like that. It’s five weeks in July and I think it ends a week before move-in. They take about 30 students for it. Two of my friends took it, but I’m not sure how much it helped them (they’re kind of irresponsible, haha)

got that yesterday also, it definitely says 2 1/2 weeks and $950. Sounds like it is a new program, since DS is in AP Calc and should finish fine (not great - but fine). I’m hoping if he takes first-level Calc. (whatever it is called) as a freshman it should be enough background. For those of us OOS sending them down for 2 1/2 weeks then coming home then back again is a bit much i think.

My DS2 did not go to it, and he’s doing fine as an engineering major.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but it seems more geared to those who want to major in engineering, but might be a bit weak in math (possibly from not having a strong Cal teacher in high school).

mom2collegekids, that was my impression of the program as well.

If the child has a background in calculus, then I don’t see why they would enroll in this program. As I see it, this program is for students who didn’t have that advanced of a hs education (few AP classes, for example) but still want to major in engineering. I’d say that if a child has a good chance of passing the AP Calculus AB or BC test, then they should not be in this program.
