Embelishing on your application

My grades are average so to stand out a little I do exaggerate, fabricate, and sometimes down right lie about my ec work and accomplishments, do they atcually check? I didn't write anything crazy, and I thoguht it over before I applied since most places don't even keep records of what people did, I hope they dont check, do they?

Meyer,

Making the clubs or activities you're involved in sound more interesting and attractive to the school's you're looking at is one thing. Completely lying and forging your accomplishments is another situation all together.

While I understand the temptation because of the low level of "policing" in this area, I believe that these things eventually will catch up to you.

So be wary of not telling the truth. I believe honesty is definitely the best policy.

If you wanted to stand out you could have actually done the extra activities or whatever it was you lied about. As you and me are applying to some of the same schools I hope they do check. Sorry if that sounds harsh but it is not fair to kids like me who do actually go the extra mile.

I'm also sorry if you are applying to those schools and using an object pronoun as a subject pronoun...just kidding. On a serious note, I have reasons why I could not have participated in many acitivties, number one is I had to care for my ailing grandmother suffering from Lupus for many years. I have mentioned that im my application but I know it would look much better if I did do something. I tried out for varsity teams and I did not make them, amongst other things I was not accepted to. Yes some of it was my fault I know, but I never caught a break and I do have good reasons, I doubt they will buy all of this so I really need an edge. Sweetny007, you should really be upset at kids that pay there way in, or are connected with somebody high, not an honest, hard working person like me.

I like how you insult sweetny's grammar and then use "there" instead of "their." I personally hope you aren't accepted...cheating and lying really tick me off.

It was a joke, not an insult so relax, and I doubt I will get into many, if any, so thanks for the encouragement. Cheating and lying may tick you off but cheaters run this country, and the world for that matter. Our president is a C student, before that Clinton was a money launderer, Regan was a drug trafficker, etc. Most apps are embelished anyway, I'm just looking for a clever way of doing it, if you don't wish to help then don't respond.

haha I was too busy earning straight A's to worry about grammar. sorry ;)

"not an honest, hard working person like me."

You say that you lied and then you call yourself honest...hmmm I also have a lot of family issues that work against me but I still manage to stand out. I am not going to play a poor me game with you though. Basically you lied and cheated on an application. You may get caught and you may not. I am not upset with anyone.

Don't lie. Don't exaggerate. Be your truthful self. Caring for an ailing grandparent is better than any EC that I know of. There will be many schools for you as you are.

"haha I was too busy earning straight A's to worry about grammar. sorry"

Well if you are admitted it won't be for your modesty. I am an honest person, I know I am. I have had a tough life and I plan to cleverly manipulate the admissions officer's emotions in my favor, I deserve to get into these schools. I grew up in Sunset Park, Brooklyn, and it was very tough for me. Anyway, I would really appreciate some advice like Boston gave me.

Are you seriously asking the CC community how to lie on your application in a niftier way? And most apps are embellished to the extent people put down that the volunteer 3 hours weekly, when in fact they skip a week here and there and sometimes only volunteer for 2 hours. They don't put down that they volunteered or had an EC they wern't even part of.
Explain your situation about your sick grandmother, the adcoms will understand. ECs wont make or break you, but it will break you if they find out you lied. And its much easier to check up on transfers because a smaller number applies.
Don't lie. It's shady, immoral, and if you get caught, you're screwed. There's no way to say that they won't check, and since there's a chance, even if its only 1% or something, its not a safe bet.

Yea that's what I'm starting to see, making up stuff is defnitely stupid. I don't wanna be admitted and get a letter 2 weeks later being thrown out. Sounds like good advice.

Hey don't dish out jokes if you can't take them. Yes, yes poor you and all that. So your tough life makes it ok to lie, manipulate and steal...wow talk about entitlement issues. What kind of advice are you looking for in this thread? If you fudged a little bit than it probably won't make a difference one way or the other. If you made up big lies than you may get caught. To answer your original question most universities do spot check.

Having a tough life does not grant you the privilege to lie.

I can take many jokes actually, and since we are applying to the same schools we should considering helping each other through an im instead of arguing. Yes all I was planning to do is "fudge" a little bit. I doubt they do a spot check if I say I volunteered for a rehab center, but I have decided not to take that chance anyway.

No it does not, but it doesn't disallow me from exploiting it and using it to my advantage. After growing up in a place like hell I figure I should get something out of it, right? It's not a lie, it is the truth.

dude MeyerLanksy that's outta line; if you don't have some basic principles like being honest, then I don't think you deserve to be in at any of the colleges you applied to. If you explain your situation convincingly, then colleges will understand. Fudging and "exploiting" your ECs to your advantage is low-down and if you do get in, i hope they find out what you did.

MeyerLansky...do what you want. According to Thomas Hobbes man lived in a state of nature without law and government - and perfect freedom. Man was in a condition called war, every man for himself. Anywho, I tried the whole honesty thing and that (I am sorry to say) did not get me anywhere. Maybe a ticket to heaven, but I really don't know. I guess my point is that you are taking a risk, as many others whom I have come to know throughout my years have as well. There are many more like you in this world. Yet to speak the truth is to have self gratification, to lie is to portray a false image of someone who you'd like to be but are in fact not. Whatever floats your boat MeyerLansky.

I'm also sorry you misspelled embellishing in the title of this thread.

J/k of course.

ofcourse

My name isn't meyer Lansky for nothing, he died one of the richest men ever just by cheating. Where does honesty get you? Living an average life, if you wanna have more cash than you know what to do with, I suggest you start thinking like me, let's stop critcizing please, I already said I won't take a chance and I lie, so get off my case. If I do, that's my business, I appreciate all those people telling me not to, not the insults though.

Your logic needs work.
