Emergency Help with Merit Scholarships and Applications!

@VioletPie‌
My advice:
Take a breath deep breath. Plant booth feet firm on the ground. Proceed with purpose. I highly recommend invetigating all of the top womens colleges.
Barnard, Bryn Mar, Mount Holyoke, Smith, Wellesley. Mount Holyoke, BrynWar and Smith are closest on feel to SBC.
Today:

Compose an email stating:

  1. your situation.
  2. Your stats and profile (brief list)
Include the EFC from your FAFSA
  3. Your objective (gaining admission to the class of 2019).
  4. Ask if x college is willing to review your app.
  5. Ask for the expert advise of the ad com.

Send the email to the head of admission and your regional (addresses found on web
Ask your parents to add the new schools to your FaFSA and CSS profile.
    Monday.

Meet with your high school GC (bring mom and dad). Ask you GC for recommendations and alter him/her that you may need expedited letters of rec and trans scripts.
    Monday
Place follow up calls to ad cons. Have your parent or GC on the call with you.

Ask for advise. Will the school consider you for fall. Is Merritt or FA available. If you were to defer do they have suggestion for a productive gap year. Get asuch info as possible. Don’t be afraid to ask for help.

Generally the adcoms are in this line of work because they genuinely want to help. And you genuinely need help.

I would NOT sell yourself short. You have solid stats. I think you should be “choosy”. I would not settle in hopes of transferring. It’s much easier to gain admission and Aid as a first year. Instead, I would look into: GAP year options or even a fifth year of HS if your HS can accommodate. Talk to your GC. This is lesson in reliance. Your obliviously a sharp cookie. Make this situation (as crappy as it is) work on your favor. Good luck.

The link that @happymomof1‌ gave in Post #11 shows specifically which colleges are extending their applications for Sweet Briar.

Given the short time frame, my vote is that the OP focus on schools on that list. Her time is limited.

@violetpie I would suggest that in addition to Smith College on the list (which you need to apply to within two days!), you might also consider Scripps College, and possibly Mills College in California.

To reply to Old Virginia: Christopher Newport (CNU) , James Madison, University of Mary Washington are all on the list to help Sweet Briar transfers. William and Mary is on the list but the extension only goes until March 13–5 days from now. VCU and UVA are not on the list.

Although it is not on the list, I do like the idea of calling Rhodes College to see what they might do for you. You are a good fit for a generous aid package, and the size of the school is a reasonable match.

Picapole, I am not sure which list you are looking at, but I have read numerous articles over the past several days about the closing of Sweet Briar. Both UVA and VCU are extending deadlines for transfer students from Sweet Briar. Pretty much all the colleges in Virginia are, but they are not offering the Teach Out option.

I feel like everyone is just tossing women’s colleges on the list because the OP was at Sweet Briar. But she is specific that she does NOT want a college that is particularly politically active, and prefers a conservative atmosphere. Some of these just aren’t appropriate (Smith, Scripps), and some are borderline on this (Bryn Mawr). I think several of the VA co-ed schools are better matches.

Mills College in California does not meet full need, so I’d be cautious about including it on your list.

Hang in there, @VioletPie - it looks like you’ve got some good options! Please do keep us updated . . .

@oldUVAgrad‌ “The link that @happymomof1‌ gave in Post #11 shows specifically which colleges are extending their applications for Sweet Briar”

The great thing is that our posts are numbered now, so we can reference them. Go back to page one, and happymom has posted the official list of other colleges’ offers that Sweet Briar received and is sharing with their students and prospects. UVA is now on there for two campuses; it wasn’t at the time of my posting. VCU still is not.

Wow, thank you guys so much! I never expected to receive this much help.
Now some responses:

@mom2collegekids Thanks again for your rec! I actually think Rhodes and I make a really good match, sent them an email already and they said they’d be willing to consider me for both enrollment and merit. Wish me luck!

@oldUVAgrad Thank you for your recs! Unfortunately I am not looking at public options. (too big, I prefer 500-2200 range )

@intparent Yeah, I threw out Smith pretty early on. It’s not the liberal atmosphere so much as the incredible gung-ho-edness about social justice that I don’t share.

@happymomof1 Thanks for the list! No idea why SBC didn’t send me this. There’s so many great options now, Wellesley, Mount Holyoke, Sewanee, W&L…

I’m thankful for all the choices I have but I’m still a little sad about SBC. The more I look at (really, really amazing) schools (that I will love), the more I realize how truly unique the culture and opportunities Sweet Briar could have offered me were. Sure everyone feels that way about “the one that got away” though. Anyway, thanks everyone again!

@violetpie after the dust settles, let us know where you land.

Another good thing is that you have the chance for the merit at other places.

Good luck with a happy match.

Hello everyone!

So I hope it isn’t against the rules for me to update this, I haven’t been on in a super long time.

So, in the end I was accepted at Sewanee and Mount Holyoke with completely inadequate aid. I was rejected at my mega-reaches (which I expected, haha) and waitlisted at Wellesley which was actually really unexpected and painful, but y’know, c’est la vie.

In the end I was accepted to both Rhodes and Agnes Scott with wonderful scholarships that made going to either a breeze. Ultimately I decided that while they are both great an all girls environment would be best for me and will be part of ASC19!

If anyone wants my exact stats for like comparison or something I’d be happy to give them if PMed. Thank you, everyone, for your help!

I’m so glad you gave us the update. Congratulations! And best of luck to you at ASC! Terrific news!

Congratulations! I know someone who works at Agnes Scott and I have the highest regard for her and the school.

Excellent - so glad to hear it!!!

Thanks so much for the update! Have a wonderful time at Agnes Scott!

Good luck to you! I’m glad it worked out!
