Hi so I am attending Pitt next year but I did not receive sufficient enough financial aid. I visited the financial aid office a couple months ago and they told me to apply for more scholarships, nothing else. How does the process of appealing for more financial aid work? Is it too late?
Do you have a reason for requesting an appeal? Has something changed since you filed your FAFSA? Is ther information the school would need to know that wasn’t contained onnthe fafsa (like job loss, medical expenses)?.
Are you instate…or out of state?
How much more money do you need?
When did you get your financial aid package? You say you visited Their financial, aid office a couple of MONTHS ago. So…what did you do to reconcile this finances issue innthe last couple of months.
Are you saying you accepted Pitts admission spot with no way to pay for it??
My reason is because I cannot afford it. I am instate. My EFC is 0 which mean I should be getting pretty much the full cost. For now I am getting $18,000 but I will still end up with high loans to pay later.
A 0 EFC does not mean that you should be getting full cost.
What are your remaining costs for UPitt?
Sounds like you can’t afford UPitt.

They essentially told you that they can’t give you any more money.
Where else did you get accepted? What is affordable??
What is your home state?
Are you OOS for UPitt?

Pitt does NOT guarantee to meet full need for all accepted students. No one ever said it did. Having a $0 EFC entitles you to the full Pell $5900 or so…and a $5500 Direct Loan.
$18,000 of aid just about covers your tuition costs. You need to come up,with money to pay for room, board, books, fees and your personal expenses.
Can you live at home and commute?
The school isn’t going to give you more aid because you can’t afford to attend.
You need an additional $12,000-$14,000 to make this school work.
Even IF Pitt gave you more money…they would not be giving you that much more…plus…you really have no basis for appeal.
It’s May 4th. Presumably you told UPitt that you’re attending and possibly declined your other schools.
Why would you do that when you don’t have the means to pay for UPitt??
You need to talk to your parents. What are THEY saying about these college costs that are not covered by your financial aid?
When you accepted the admission offer…how did you and your parents THINK he bills were going to be paid?
You cannot afford Pitt. It is either a PASSHE school or community college.
With a $0 EFC and being a PA student, you probably got the full federal Pell grant of about $6,000, a state grant of about $4,000, maybe a need based grant from Pitt, and your federal student loan of $5,500.
You will still need about $12,000 more for room and board.
Did you get accepted to any schools where all costs are pretty much covered with scholarships, grants and your student loan?
Are you valedictorian or salutatorian? Some PASSHE schools give free tuition for that. Your Pell and loan and state grant could then pay for room and board.
What schools can you commute to?
