Ok, so the first semester at my school is now over. So are midyear reports required for colleges?

Also, I asked my counselor, and he said IB classes are not averaged out into one grade like other classes. The problem is that my second term grades are worse than my first term grades, which will destroy all my chances, unless colleges look at IB grades differently. My school's IB coordinator said she will also send a letter to the colleges stating that thee grades are only a progress report and not the final grade.

IB Math HL- B, C
IB English HL-A,B
IB Chemistry HL- A, B
IB History of Americas SL-B,A
IB Theory of Knowledge-A,A

I also took AP physics C and got an A for first semester. And I'm applying to these schools:

-Upenn
-Duke
-Wash. U. St. louis
-Northwestern
-Cornell
-Emory
-UChicago
-Vanderbilt
-Johns Hopkins
-Michigan
-UVA
-UNC chapel hill
-U. of wash.

Alright, so, will my IB grades make a huge impact? I know they're bad, but IB doesn't give out semester grades, and if they were averaged out, I would have all As and 1 B.

Well I’ve already done that! I’m not asking for colleges to not notice; I want to them to know what I am going through and why my grades dropped.

I have 6 classes (all AP/IB). All the other seniors take only 4, and only like, 1 of those classes is AP/IB. Some don’t even take 4 classes at all! You’re going to compare my schedule to theirs? I’ll have you know that I officially have the most intense and rigorous senior schedule of this year in my whole county!

You try doing this why applying to 15 colleges. I had no choice in the number of schools I applied for; it had to be a big number because of ethnicity.

Okay, well first other students take full IB schedule + 2 other classes… Anyway, since you have the most rigorous schedule in your school and they aren’t final grades, you should be okay, although that C in Math HL isn’t the best…

I don’t know if they look at IB grades “differently” - at my school we do get semester grades. Perhaps because they are in quarter format they might.

yeah my school uses a semester schedule, and each semester has 2 terms; so that’s 4 terms in a year. AP classes are full year but split into 2 semesters; but IB courses are not, and they will not go onto an official transcript until the end of the year.

also, it’s kinda hard for people in our school to take full IB and other classes because we only have 4 periods in a day. Also, our school is the only one that offers IB in our county.

Math HL is just too insanely hard, and our teacher makes the classes much harder than it needs to be.

btw, does anyone know whether any of those schools listed above require midyear reports?

Councilmember, there is no reason to criticize DarkKnight666. He does not sound arrogant at all. He is merely pointing out the fact that he is taking the hardest course load that his school offers.

Now to DarkKnight666: Your grades won’t really hurt you. All As and one B is not too bad. As many CCers have stated before, plenty of students admitted into top schools have a couple of Bs sprinkled on their transcript. Don’t worry too much about it. Good luck.

And I know UChicago requires a midyear report.

OP…my S did even worse than you second semester but with a similarly tough schedule of IB and AP and applying to some of the same schools…I also said take responsibility but also go to teachers and counselors about damage control…You have to be honest and say is this a normal pattern for you? was there something special that happened (swine flu)? early senioritis? My S’s counselor had great advice…S needs to work butt off for next 2-3 weeks and get progress reports in showing that he has the problem classes under control…needs to talk to counselor frankly aobut what went wrong and why it isn’t “the normal” for him nor a sign of things to come and she will send a cover letter with mid-term grades. Will it work? maybe … Also my S has several safeties that don’t even ask for midterms and has 2 acceptances in hand…you should have this also because your list is scary weighted to reaches. If it isn’t too late submit to a school with rolling admissions so you have a place to go in September…this would be the advice even if your grades had not slipped.

boring…Im gonna eat some nachos…:0
