Emergency Pediatric Physician

How well does an Emergency Pediatric Physician pay? Is the job outlook good?

Nothing listed for Emergency Pediatric Physician specifically, but I would imagine it would have a similar range to an Emergency Physician, and a Pediatrician.

Oh ok. Thanks for the links.

Im bringing up an old post...but how do you think the outlook of being an Emergency Pediatric Physician is? How long will it take to become an EPP? I calculated 14 years. Am I wrong?

I'm at my parent's right now, but I have a book that I can look this up in...

My guess is that it'll be 12-14, depending on Undergrad time (4 or 5) and then the actual path of residencies and fellowships.

Oh ok thanks..whats the book you used?

The Ultimate Guide to Choosing a Medical Specialty. Not sure who the author is, but I know it's published by Lange...

Oh..ok thanks I'll take a look at that.

Okay, finally home.

ED residency is either a 3 or 4 year program. Most are 3, some are a full 4, and some are 3 but require a transitional year (1 year internship in medicine, surgery, or peds - one of those) for a total of 4.

Peds fellowship for ED is 2 years.

The other option is a peds residency of 3 years followed by a 3 year ED fellowship. This is (according to my book) if you are leaning a little bit more towards doing research in your future. Most of the fellowships have the first year as heavy in clinic, and the last more on the research side of things.

So all told, you could go as quick as 13 years from HS, and as long as 15 after HS...assuming you get in right away from undergrad (which is probably not the majority of people...at least from my experience in interviews and w/ my classmates.)

Oh thanks for that info. I'm not really into the research aspect of things, but I would love to go directly in dealing with patients. Would that be the 13 or 15 year route?

Thanks again, you have been a great help.

There are also EM/Peds residency programs - there are only three in the country, but they are 5 years long. My husband considered it, but opted instead for straight EM.

On the other hand, those that are boarded in EM peds are in high demand. Not that EM is a specialty where it's hard to find a job, but there you go.

Thanks, do you know where those 3 residency programs are?

Also would it be better to take a EM residency and work at a Children's Hospital or take a Ped residency and work in a ER at a Children's hospital.

Is that even possible?

Thanks.

Indiana U, Arizona, and Maryland. The Arizona program is new - they are in their first year.

I believe most children's hospitals would want you to either be boarded in EM/PEds or be boarded in EM with a peds fellowship - IF you want to do EM in the children's hospital. Obviously there are a lot of specialties that work out of any children's hospital.

Oh..ok thanks a lot for this info.

Is this 5 years considered a lot of time for a residency?
