Hey guys, I am worried about my chances of being accepted into a good business program. I have 7 w's (due to a crisis in the beginning of my cc career), but have since then picked it up and gotten straight A's. Currently I have a 3.8 GPA with phenomenal EC's. I am worried about my schedule though as it has not been extremely tough other than taking 3 quantitative classes in the summer and getting all A's. If you guys could chance me I would greatly appreciate it. What schools should I be looking at to transfer into? Thanks!

So far: USC Marshall, Emory.. anything else that is worth a decent shot?

The Ws span the majority of your CC career and show up as a very strong pattern over 2 years. Put another way, there is not quite enough evidence in your transcript to show that this pattern of Ws is a thing of the past. Finishing your current classes will be very important: both to show you can handle a full course load and that you are no longer getting Ws.

All that said, how places like USC will look at your transcript is hard to say. Even with your recent straight As, I would still place your chances at USC as a reach. There is just a lot of competition, especially for the business school. There are students who have 3.8+ gpas without a history of Ws that will get turned down.

The best thing to do is to add more matches to your list. You clearly have the intelligence to do well at college, but there aren’t enough spaces at all the elites for those who want to attend so you need to have plenty of options.

Also, it’ll be difficult to explain your W’s because your struggles were, let’s say, self inflicted. It isn’t a family trauma, and though it’s important, it could have easily been avoided.

And as the previous person states, your W’s are very wide spread.

Look at less competitive schools. Your GPA is good, but is no better than what most students applying to those schools have.

Thanks guys!!! I really appreciate the help! So USC seems to be a reach but what about emory? I understand my class schedule rigor is bad but don’t my EC’s make up for that? I figured with someone who has worked as hard as I did (with EC’s) colleges should overlook my W’s. Also, the reason my colleges are so limited is because of my major (finance) which I am trying to get into I-banking. Their are not too many colleges who will accept me based on my schedule and who have close connections with i-banking.

I don’t know about your chances at Emory, but I don’t usually hear about people interested in I-Banking going to Emory.

These schools are probably just as hard to get into, but they’re a lot better for I-Banking.

Michigan
Berkeley
UCLA
UT Austin

From what I know, I-Banking has a lot more to do with target than anything, and great state schools, like the ones mentioned above, are target schools for a lot of firms.

What state are you in?

Well Emory seems to have a good track record of getting people into IB if they have a good GPA.I live in California and go to a community college here. I forgot to mention Berkeley is my top school as they dont care about W’s for transfer… only problem is, I feel like if I dont get into Berkeley (HAAS), I wont have a chance anywhere else.

Well, for IB I would choose UCLA and Berkeley over Emory. And I know Berkeley and UCLA take most of their transfers from California CC’s.

I think you’d have a pretty decent shot at Berkeley. Try other state schools as well, they’re probably your best bet.

Thanks! yeah Berkeley would be amazing to get into… many say I have a great shot at getting into Berkeley but well see. Also, what other state schools would you recommend? The problem with Indiana/ UNC is you cant get directly into the business program. I REALLY appreciate all the help you have provided me.

UT Austin
UVA
Michigan

And for private schools (for finance):
Rochester
NYU
BYU

Thanks! I feel like most of those schools with an exception of BYU/Rochester will deny me as I have a weak schedule/lots of W’s… that is what I am most worried about.

You’ll never know if you don’t try. Good luck.

thanks! I really appreciate all the help
