Emerson and BU- can non-theater majors audition for shows?

My D is torn between her 2 loves- creative writing and theater. She is applying to some schools for their writing program and other schools for theater, hoping she will have a clearer vision of which way to go once she sees where she is accepted. She is hoping to major in one and minor in the other, depending on the school she eventually chooses.

Here is my question: does anyone know whether students who are NOT majoring in theater can audition for shows and be involved with theater extracurricularly at Emerson or Boston University? I know at some schools many non-theater majors are part of the theater dept. but I'm not sure about these 2 schools.

There is lots of extracurricular theatre at BU. In addition, theatre minors can audition for School of Theatre productions.

Playwrighting is a good way to combine creative writing and theatre . . .

Jus’ saying.

KEVP

Yes, Kevp, that is why Fordham is on her list. She has also recently asked for permission to student direct a show this year at her high school after taking a Directing class at Gov School this summer. She loves the creative process of story telling; just trying to find a place that will allow her to explore all the different avenues in which she is interested- acting, writing, directing! And preferably in a larger city…that is the other criteria about which she feels strongly.

It’s going to be a fun year!

My daughter is a double-major in acting and playwriting at Fordham-- let me know if you have questions.

Hi Kelly! I went to Emerson so I can’t speak for BU, but at Emerson only theatre students can audition for the main stage shows. Emerson has whats called Emerson Stage and each year they put on about 10 productions (two musicals, a student written play, a TYA show, a dance show, and the rest are straight plays) all of which are faculty directed or they bring in guest directors. These shows are put up in one of Emerson’s five theatres which range from a black box to a huge renovated opera house called the Cutler Majestic. However, anyone in the theatre department can audition for these shows, not only acting or musical theatre majors. So if your daughter is thinking of doing a non-performance theatre degree, she could still audition for the shows. That being said the shows are competitive to get into, even for performance majors.

HOWEVER, Emerson has an awesome student theatre community. There are five student theatre companies on campus, all of which receive money from the school to put on their shows. There are probably 10-15 student shows per semester. EVERYONE IN THE SCHOOL CAN AUDITION FOR THESE. Lots of non-theatre majors are in these shows, and even direct them too!

Hope this helped!
Hope

There are extra curricular theatre groups at BU (Stage Troupe is the largest I believe) that put on musicals and plays. These shows are NOT open to theatre students, just non-theatre majors.
