Emerson camparisons

How is the Musical Theater program at Emerson? Is it as good as NYU Tisch, Boston conservatory, or UCLA? I have been realllyyy impressed by them so far but I dont know to much about Emerson. If anyone can please inform me on Emerson that’d be great! okay, Thank you! :)

Hi!
I just finished my freshman year at Emerson as a musical theatre major; Hopefully I can give some insight regarding the differences between Emerson and other top programs. As a disclaimer, I’m not very familiar with UCLA’s program at all, so I can’t really help in that comparison. But in regards to NYU and Boco, Emerson’s program is much smaller. NYU and Boco have around 50/60 kids in each class while Emerson aims for 16. Similar to NYU, Emerson is an acting focused program housed within a liberal arts college. At Boco, you would have fewer liberal arts requirements, different acting training, and probably more dance training (although dance training is made very accessible to Emerson students by taking class at Boston dance studios such as Boston Ballet or Jeannette Neill). These are just some of the basic differences between Emerson and the other programs; if you have other more specific question do not hesitate to ask.

I heard that Emerson may be closing there program, or that it has weakened? Is that a rumor?

Errr yea. I’m pretty sure neither of those statements are true.

Thanks, good to hear.

Does Emerson have a cut program for MT?

^^^^Yes, they do. Those cut don’t have to leave but have to switch to a BA. The sophomore class is a set number that is lower than the incoming freshmen class. Some choose of their own accord to switch to a BA. But some have to as only a certain number may advance to the second year of the BFA.

soozievt- do you know what that set number is for the sophomore class?

showgirlsmama, it would be better to ask someone directly affiliated in some capacity at Emerson than me.

So, don’t quote me or rely on this but I believe Emerson has about 25 MT freshmen and by junior year, they wish to have 16 in the BFA in MT program.

Students are not cut in the sense of having to leave Emerson but are then placed in the BA programs if they don’t make it into the sixteen slots in the BFA in MT class later on.

Just to chime on in. I visited Emerson earlier this year, and they stated that by Junior year they MUST have no more than 16 in the BFA Musical Theatre program. The class WILL be cut down to 16. They did say, though, sometimes enough students just “drop out,” and there is no “cutting” necessary. So, if enough students leave the program on their own, and the class is left with 16 or fewer, then Emerson will not “cut.” I was also told by a student that it has “never been a surprise” to a student that was cut. He claimed that the students who were cut, “seemed to know that they would be cut ahead of time.”

Hope this info helps someone.

That is right…not all of the dwindling number in the MT class is due to “cutting.” Some students choose to change to a BA of their own accord. For example, a very close friend of my D who she grew up with and went to school with here, entered the BFA in MT at Emerson. She chose to switch to the BA track after a year. She is very involved in music and wanted to also take classes at Berklee. She graduated Emerson in 2009 and has an album out and in fact, my D just attended this girl’s singer/songwriter/band gig in NYC this week.
