Emerson Chances?

Emerson College is by far my first choice college and I am very weary of how I will do in the admissions process. Anyone that can offer up any advice and/or insight into this will be greatly appreciated. I intend on studying Broadcast Journalism and pursuing a career in front of the camera in the news industry.

What do you think my chances are with the following stats?

-African-American, Cape Verdean, Multi-Racial Male
-First generation college student
-3.57 weighted GPA
-1610 SATs (am retaking to try to do better)
-About 11 extra-curriculars, 6 of which I hold a leadership position in, and 3 of which are in the field I want to go into at emerson. These extra-curriculars include the track team one year and the National Honor Society currently.
-Well over 350 volunteer hours with Special Olympics, local senior center, school events, etc.
-I am a well-seasoned on-camera anchor and have a resume tape to show it.
-Will have GREAT recommendations

I have taken all honors classes throughout high school and am taking one AP this senior year.

I have a year-round, part-time job at a supermarket and am always on the go. Let me know what you think about Emerson and maybe any other universities in this area that I may consider adding to my list as a good fit... If you will.

Thanks, Ryan

bumppp, anyone?

Ryan, my d is entering her soph year at Emerson majoring in Broadcast Journalism. Her gpa was very similar to yours although her SAT scores were slightly higher. Emerson does look at what experience you have prior to application so the work you have previously done in broadcasting will help you out. I think you have a great chance of acceptance. The acceptance gpa for the school is for overall and not individual programs. You should be able to gain acceptance with your scores.

You’ll be more than fine, I think. I got accepted and my stats wern’t as good as that. They really take into consideration talent, so send as much sample work as you can. I got accepted as a transfer student (2.6 HS GPA, 3.77 college GPA, 1750 SAT)… but I had some amazing work samples, a great essay, and some great LOR. So, with Emerson, it’s more than just stats. Show them how much you want to go… and write a great essay. That’s huge.

There aren’t many schools in Boston where you can major in broadcast journalism. Other than Emerson two that have good reputations are Boston University (basically the same gpa requirements) and Suffolk University (which does have lower requirements).
