When we were at Emerson for the performance arts tour, the student there mentioned that the BA Acting major was actually more competitive as far as getting in than the BFA Acting. My D and I were wondering if this is really true from anyone with experience with that school? It's her favorite! Thanks!!

(All she wants to do is act, and we know that BFA is better for that, but my husband and I would really prefer she goes to a BA so that she can have a fall-back-minor)

My S is auditioning for BA Acting on Thursday. I don’t recall hearing that it was a more competitive program to get into when we toured over the summer. I do know that both our tour guide and the student who led our performance roundtable said they started out as MT BFA and switched to BA Acting but that you could not switch from BA to BFA.

I think BA v. BFA is an individual choice not that one is better than the other. My S is also a writer and feels he will have an easier time scheduling classes for a double major or minor or even to try a class that he just seems interested in if he goes the BA route but all the thespians in his troupe think that the BFA has more prestige. Different schools of thought. Different priorities for a college program. Different ways of pursuing the same end goal…to make a living in the arts which is not an easy task for anyone regardless of which degree they end up with!

My D auditioned EA last year as a BA–not only did she think at Emerson she would double major and would be more able to do that as a BA, but at our school tour the year before that (so we are talking 3 years ago!), the student guide said they had fewer students apply for the BA than the BFA and so it was very slightly less competitive to get into. But of course over this amount of time, these things can change. Bottom line then is to go with the program that makes more sense for you personally.

My S will be auditioning at Emerson in a few weeks for the BA in acting. Since he went to a performing arts high school, he decided he did not want to be in a BFA program where he would be with theater0only students all day. Plus, he wanted more flexibility in his curriculum, such as visual arts and film.

Would welcome any comments from students/parents who go through the Emerson audition process.

I’m actually a sophomore BA Acting major here at Emerson who works at the auditions and as a tour guide. The BFA and BA programs are, IMO, equally competitive to get into. It is true that more students tend to audition for the BFA program, however more students are admitted to the BFA program as the BA is broken up into two catagories, BA Acting and BA Theater Education Acting. Each program looks to have an incoming class of around 24 so that’s 24 freshman BFA actors and 24 combined BA Acting and BA Theater Ed Acting.

As a BFA who moved to the BA for flexibility I can tell you that there is no difference in the level of training except for the amount of time spent inside a studio, it’s very equal in terms of casting for our mainstage shows as well as other acting opportunities all over campus.
