Hey there isn't much on the boards for Emerson. Is that a statement itself? Does anyone know if it is a ok school? ESP the film program? Thanks!

My daughter is a junior marketing major and loves the school. She has had such a great experience there that her younger sister is awaiting her application decision in the Writing for Film and Television program. My daughter has many friends in the Film program and says they have been more than satisfied.

Thanks that sounds very reassuring

There’s a lot of information about Emerson on the Musical Theater threads! Most of it will, of course, have to do with MT, but I believe there’s information about the campus, academic, etc. as well.

my daughter is about to graduate from Emerson, with a degree in Media /television production. She has loved her Emerson experience and is currently winding down her last semester in LA , and also completing her internship

My daughter is currently a freshman TV production major. Although she loves Emerson, I am very concerned about employment in this field and the ability to get into grad school with this degree. Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

My daughter is applying EA for Emerson and it is her top choice. She wants to be a film critic or work in the film industry in some capacity. I, too, worry about employability and have told her that if she majors in film, she has to double major or at least minor in something else, preferably business, to get some skills to make her employable in between film jobs.

The one thing we heard from the communications departments that we looked at is that a bachelor’s degree is sufficient to find work in film and TV. I hope this is true.

Yes, I heard the same from them during their spring event welcoming the incoming freshmen. However, I am worried sick that Emerson is just a big sales machine telling us what we want to hear (Emerson Mafia, blah, blah, blah). I have been trying for awhile , with no success, to get job placement statistics for graduating seniors (within their chosen fields).

BTW, I was thinking about grad school (if needed/desired) for a completely different major, to ensure gainful employment, not to further her undergrad degree.

S1 graduated from the WLP program in 2006, was recruited by Philadelphia Teaching Fellows, in his 4th year (just tenured) teaching high school english and earned a Masters of Ed (free) thru the fellowship program. Presently applying for his doctorate.

S2 is in his third year in the VMA/Sound design program. He will be doing the LA program/internship next fall 2010. He is also active with the radio station as an assistant engineer and so far has had some positive feedback with internship prospects for the summer.

So in short…Emerson, like any school is what you make of it. Taking advantage of the many clubs, organizations, workshops is important to your future options.

joyofwinter,

When we looked at American University, the admissions folk STRONGLY suggested at least minoring in another area and recommended double majoring in another area. Unlike Emerson, AU won’t let students double major or major/minor in two areas of communication. The second major must be in another area so the students can have a specialty. Emerson apparently lets the students double major or minor in any number of communication areas.

I like AU’s approach but D wants to go to Emerson because she can double major in film and journalism.

BTW, D was just accepted into the film program. Emerson is her first choice at present and AU is her third choice.

joyofwinter, I don’t think grad school acceptance is an issue…actually, BU has one of the best and my daughter contemplated it. Emerson is well recognized in the tv/film and other industries , no doubt.
My daughter just completes the LA program and is offically a graduate ! Had a great internship that unfortunately did not lead to a job…just like a lot of other college grads today, they are having a hard time finding jobs. She is staying in LA to pursue her applications with the hopes of getting a job, any job in her field. She does have other friends that are a year ahead of her that do have jobs in their field…took a few months but it did happen.
I think a lot has changed in the last two yrs , compared to the time she was a starry eyed applicant three yrs ago !!

Thanks for the feedback and encouragement, everyone. I’m still somewhat uneasy about paying all this tuition for such a nebulous outcome, but hoping for the best.

lje62 - what majors was your daughter interested in at BU?
