Emerson, PC, MassArt, BU, URI: Boy, would I love a chance :-)

Could I start by saying, please don't move this over to the Transfer forum, because I've posted a similar thread already over there, but I got really no good responses. So I was hoping the people over here could be more of a help, cause to be honest I'm very confused about where I stand. Here's all the info you need, I hope! If you have any additional questions, I'd be more than happy to answer.

Colleges I plan on applying to:
-Emerson College [Film]
-Providence College [Creative Writing]
-Massachusetts College of Art and Design [Film]
-Boston University [Film]
-University of Rhode Island [Film]

-High School GPA: 2.59***
-5 Honors classes, 1 AP
-Class Rank: 52/130***

-Community College GPA:
1st Semester (currently): 4.0 (15 credits; 5 classes);
2nd Semester: classes already picked, with my dedication it's looking like my whole year GPA will be 4.0

-SAT:
1st attempt /i: 590 (rdng) 570 (mth), 580 (wrtng), 1740 (ttl)
*2nd attempt
: Will be taking in November. I took a prep class and have studied and I think I can increase each score by 40-50 points. (which would be between 1860-1890)

-Extracurriculars [High School]: Varsity basketball (3 years), Varsity football (3 years), Newspaper staff (3 years, 1 year as editor), Public Library volunteer (1 year), High school theatre (3 years, awards won), Caron Production theatre (1 year), Pet Partners volunteer (1 year)

-Extracurriculars [Community College]:
1st Semester: Newspaper staff, Film club, Theatre Rep., Pet Partners volunteer, Animal Advocates volunteer.
2nd Semester: Probably going to be the same as the 1st semester.

-Employment: Sears shoes associate for 7 months.

-Letters of Recommendation: Respected high school theatre director (an Emerson alum), Current college theatre director (a former Emerson teacher), Rhode Island state-sentator

-Essay: I haven't exactly nailed the essay yet, but I'm considering writing about my growth as a student and a person from high school to college, and how I overcame tragedy (my parents both died), also incoorperating my love for film.

Portfolio: I've been making short-films on my own for a couple of years, and I'm working on a couple of new shorts to send into the film programs I'm applying to (Emerson requires one, MassArt requires a full portfolio). I want to show them how creative I am, so I have a few concept ideas. I'm thinking about a modern-silent version of Alice in Wonderland.

-Additional Info: My senior year of high school I wrote and directed a stage-production at my high school. ***I graduated high school last June, and decided community college for one year would be very good for me. I was sort of a slacker in high school, and I never fully lived up to my potential like I'm doing now. Plus, dealing with my parents death was a hard time for me. If it matters, I'm an 18 year-old male caucasion.

Thank you so much in advance!

Hi,
I went to Mass Art many years ago and I’m sure things have changed somewhat but I think that a lot still depends on your portfolio. They are (or were) willing to forgive other areas of relative weakness if your portfolio showed a great deal of potential. I would suggest that you find other artists or perhaps former teachers who you trust and have them critique the films that you are submitting. Make sure that you choose people who have experience and will give you informed assessment of your work. Another thing that you can do would be to try to attend a Portfolio Day at an art school. If you are not familiar with this, it is a day when students can bring their work to the school and a panel of instructors will look over their portfolio and give feedback. You might also want to call the schools on your list to set up an interview. At the interview you can ask about the things that you need to work on in preparation for your application process.
For what it’s worth, you seem like a hard worker who has true direction and determination. I think the schools will appreciate that! And I’m very sorry for your personal tragedy. Good luck! I hope everything goes well.

Thank you so much for the advice. It’s good to hear from someone who actually went to a school I’m applying to. I’ll definitly put a lot of time into my portfolio. I don’t really take any ‘art’ classes (well, unless you count theatre classes) this semester, but next semester I’m taking a film class, so I’ll talk to that teacher about looking into my work. The portfolio day sounds fantastic, I’m going to attend that for sure, because I mean what better way to have a great portfolio ithan to have a panel of instructors looking at your work!
Thank you, I try to work hard, especially since I screwed up early in my high school career. Thanks again!

It sounds like you have a plan. Look into portfolio days now since they are usually scheduled in the fall. If you miss them, you might try to make an appointment with an admissions rep at one of the schools to get some advice. Also, be sure to check each schools portfolio requirements to see the specific requirements for your proposed major. Every school is a bit different which can make it frustrating. Worth doing your homework. Again, Good luck!

It sounds like you’re a hard worker! I work at MassArt, but not in Admissions. Anyway, my hunch is that your comm. college record primarily speaks for you after two full-time semesters. At that point, your HS record drops into the background somewhat. And your list of colleges looks good based on staying in this area.

MassArt doesn’t always accept transfer students at the level of credits they have acheived. It’s more about portfolio. So in order to be admitted as a sophomore your portfolio has to be equal to or better than MassArt sophomores’ work.

Good luck on your upcoming transfer.

Sounds like I’ll have to mke my portfolio top-notch. Thanks!

bumppppppppppppppppppp

I’d love a few more responses.
