Eminence Scholarship

Does anyone know when the results of the eminence scholarship application will come out?

I’m wondering the same thing. The application was due February 8th, and they first select 75 students who will be asked to come back for an interview. Then they will select 25 from that group, and they award the scholarship near the end of March or beginning of April. It seems like there is a lot to do in a short period of time.

The interview event is April 5-6, so presumably scholarship decisions won’t be until mid-April. I have no idea when the invites will be sent…S should have asked that too!

That’s odd. Last year a poster announced on this forum on April 3rd that he/she was just awarded the Eminence Scholarship, so based on that, interviews would be held in March.

Last year was the first year and the entire Eminence program seems to be different this year. It is now part of the Honor’s Program - from what I read last year, you didn’t even have to be in honors. Last year it was 3.2 gpa after year two, now it’s 3.4 each semester. Last year there were 40 for instate and 10 for OOS - this year there’s only 25 total.

Thanks for clarifying that. With the applications being due Feb. 8th, they won’t even meet with the finalists for 8 weeks. They are not allowing themselves much time to choose the final 25 students they want to award the scholarships to if they are only interviewing them April 5-6. Presumably, by the time many students find out, they will have already committed elsewhere. I would think they would want to put more effort into choosing the final 25, than narrowing the group down to 75, but what do I know?

Requiring a 34+ ACT and top 3% rank, they are looking for the cream of the crop - the students that are also likely applying to HYPSM. Maybe they want to wait for the post-HYPSM notification withdrawals so they can offer them to the students who they know are still interested. No one has to make a decision until May 1, so if someone is really interested, they won’t commit elsewhere.

Does it require those stats or are those the average ones for successful applicants?

MommyDearest, I get that students have until May 1st to commit, but if the interviews are being held April 5-6, when will the decision about the 25 be made? Doesn’t it follow that if it takes close to 8 weeks to select the 75 finalists, that it will take several weeks to choose the final 25? That brings us to the end of April. So either students are pretty sure they are going to be offered a scholarship and will sit around and wait, or they will assume they are not going to be offered a scholarship, and commit somewhere else. Either way, when students find out, they will only have a few days to decide because May 1st will be looming.

OSU makes a big deal about sending in your deposit ASAP so you have a better choice in housing. What are they going to do about the scholarship recipients who will only be notified a few days before the magical commitment date of May 1st? It doesn’t seem quite fair to those outstanding students.

I would think that once interviews are complete the decision to the top 25 would be made quickly. I am guessing that they are carefully pilfering through the applications to get the 75, and obviously they will all be qualified matches for the scholarship. The interview is going to let the cream rise to the top. I bet notifications are within days of the interview. Good luck!

@efeens44…I could have sworn that when I read about it last year 34/3% was a cutoff, but it looks like those are the stats for the “typical” Eminence recipient. I don’t know how they determined who to invite to apply.

@Flyme…It is frustrating, but I guess I’ve just come to accept it…there are other schools that have similar big scholarship timelines (one notifies by May 1.) Eminence deadline was 2/8, so if they notify in the next two weeks that means they had 5 weeks to go through all those apps. 35K applied to OSU - not sure how many were invited to apply for Eminence, but it probably wasn’t a small number. I agree with Enolamae that it won’t take as long to widdle down the 75 to 25. At that point, if you’re still interested and you know you have a 33% chance, it’s worth waiting. Just have your decision ready ahead of time - don’t waiting until May 1 to figure it out. If you don’t get it, then you deposit at the next school on your list. I think April is going to be chaos - I don’t think we’ll be sitting around waiting!

For the schools that don’t do housing by lottery, they recommend you you deposit early, but you can cancel if you decide to go somewhere else. Sometimes it’s non-refundable though. I’m not fond of this either, but again, OSU isn’t the only school that does it this way.

Notifications will be sent oyut the week of March 18. Interviews April 5 or 6. I talked to the office in charge of the scholarship.

Thanks. At least they are giving a fair amount of notice to make travel arrangements.

Thanks, Windsurferie! Now I know to stop stalking the mail lady!

Earlier posts in this discussion imply that some people are invited to apply. My D just applied on her own. Are some specifically asked to apply? She has received the Maximus so far. Obviously the Eminence would be better.

Was she accepted into Honors? That’s a prerequisite for applying.

I applied RD and received my acceptance on Friday. I applied to honors and have not gotten any scholarship info/honors info yet. I also applied for eminence, but was not invited. There was an easily accessible app online.

Yes she was accepted to honors and completed the eminence application. I was just wondering if they solocit in some way or just wait to see what turns up. I guess we will know next week.

I think what you mean is that an acceptance in to honors is a prerequisite to being selected for the eminence award, not applying. You could apply if you were still waiting to hear back from honors.

This was the invite he received, but it does appear that anyone can apply…
