Emma Sulkowicz's Alleged Attacker speaks again in new article

You are right - it was a long time ago. (The 1980s) The group I was in had a mix of women who had different experiences. The one I remember most was a young teenage girl who was gang-raped walking home from school at age 13. (This seemed the most horrific). Another woman had picked up a guy in a bar and went back to his apartment and he raped her. That case came to trial but he was found not guilty because they smoked pot together (it was illegal) and because she had willingly gone to his apartment. There was also a woman who said she had been raped by her dentist when he gave her laughing gas. They were, as you say, basically all stranger-rape because none of the women had been involved in a sexual relationship with the man they said raped them.

If Garisto didn’t hedge his bets he would be shunned by all his female friends. He writes as much in his article. He is a junior. He can’t afford to bid his social life good bye just yet.

Oh yeah, major back pedaling…he’s probably getting close to graduation and wondering who is going to hire him.

Susanna, sorry you were raped. Wish you the best. Thanks for your posts.

Susanna, those are all horrible stories. I’m hopeful that a woman who meets a guy in a bar, and then is raped by him, would get a better result at trial nowadays than in the 1980s. Hopeful, but not certain-- I think a lot of prosecutors in 2015 still wouldn’t even bring that case to trial. I’d call the case of the woman raped by her dentist “acquaintance rape” and the case of the woman raped by the man she met “date rape” or “acquaintance rape;” that’s the terminology people now use, I think. But no matter. They are rapes, and the rapists should be put in prison.

Well, I’ll be honest. It’s hard to read the Facebook back and forth and not think differently about this case.

@KKRSCG " And since I am vindictive, if I were in his shoes I would file a report of harrassment every time the mattress was carried and the claim serial rapist was made without any proof whatsoever."

Well the carrying of the mattress is now actually a requirement for her graduation. She can’t stop now if she wants to. The whole project which is the subject of her senior art thesis was approved and is being supervised by a university professor. How they go that to fly after the university found him “not responsible” is curious.

This whole thing has turned into a gold plated fiasco.

The fact that she is working on a project doesn’t prevent him from filing a complaint if he feel harassed. If her actions are deemed harassment, she’d have to adjust her project or pick another.

In that case, Paul should sue the professor and the University for aiding and abetting libel. The University has money even though Emma doesn’t.

Perhaps after they finish with their investigation of Rolling Stone, the dons at the Columbia Journalism School could look into the hatchet/hack job the Columbia Spectator did on this dude. I think they are even worse than RS. Don’t believe anything an Ivy League trained journalist writes.

I agree. i would start the list with Ann Coulter and Megan McArdle.

I can’t find when he reported to the student organization.

Alh, fantastic link.

The writer of the Daily Beast piece, Cathy Young, has no credibility. Megan McArdle is a mouthpiece. It is amazing that those who said their bs detectors went off when they read the RS piece do not turn on their bs detectors when reading Cathy Young.

There is a fourth victim? A guy?
Does Columbia know the fourth guy filed a Title 9 complaint? Wouldn’t Columbia have to know?
Four complaints isn’t enough to get rid of somebody?
If the 4th guy’s accusations are true, the accused is looking like a serial rapist who assaults his friends.

Wonder why this fourth complaint got so little coverage and why was it excluded from the NY Times and other articles? First I have heard of it. Interesting.

this is why I left the other thread - two many blog links. Harvest, Jezebel is a blog and a not very credible one.

What matters…

Is there a 4th complaint or not?

My son went to grad school at Columbia so I love the place.

But…

The Jezebel piece is really worth reading – it includes text-by-text commentary by Sulkowicz on the texts published in the Daily Beast article. The commentary isn’t earth-shattering, but it provides a reasonable account of how those texts are consistent with having been raped. It also includes a tidbit I hadn’t seen before – that Sulkowicz talked about the incident with a friend immediately afterward, and they described it as a rape. There is a lot more detail from the woman who complained that Nungesser groped her, and of course the bombshell brand-new accusation from “Adam”. Which, unlike either of the other two complaints, actually sounds like the same kind of behavior Sulkowicz saus she encountered.

If you are a conspiracy theorist, it’s easy to think this is a conspiracy against an innocent man. But at least at this point there’s some consistency in the attack.

One of the feelings I got from Sulkowicz’s commentary is that – apart from some of the obvious advantages – it sucks to be young. She says she was devastated by what her close friend had done to her, but she just couldn’t bring herself to communicate that at all.

I think the sucks to be young part is important.

We are talking about people who are around 20 years old. We then project age 50 type thinking on them.

Most of us have kids in their 20’s so we should know better than to project our thinking onto 20 year olds.

The Jezebel article was very good.

There is either a 4th complaint or there isn’t.

The Jezebel piece was an interesting read and I am glad it was posted, but I would hope those complaining about Cathy Young also realize Jezebel has a slant to its articles and reporting.

Still, it was helpful to read Emma’s annotations and context. I still can’t say I understand some of her messages to him, especially in light of how she says she was feeling behind the scenes, but I am not a 20 year old college student anymore either.

I think the 4th complaint was a secret until now because who was going to mention it? I think the school keeps it confidential, Nungesser (who allegedly knows the complaint exists according to Adam) sure won’t talk about it, so it is up to the alleged victim to come forward—which he now has.

Going back to the issue of media coverage, which nowadays does not just include traditional news sources but blogs and podcasts, etc—I don’t know HOW you can get a balanced story these days. When Emma and Josie did not cooperate with Young, they were all but ensuring a one sided “hit piece” since they chose not to comment and rebut. Perhaps Young would have quoted them fairly and truthfully.

Or perhaps (more likely) Emma and Josie were correct, and it was only through what they considered a supportive website that they could get their truth out.

I am just more and more struck by how partisan the media has become, even in the last 5 years. I know this divide has always existed but the Internet allows it to expand and ever widen. I have tried to read everything I can on these stories, and yes, I have been taken to some sites where I can not believe what the people are saying and writing and commenting (there are A LOT of people very angry and hateful towards women), And I have read some things in a completely opposite vein, concerning the same angry and hateful feelings towards men and rape culture and the patriarchy.

If you were to read only coverage from Jezebel, you would have a completely different feel for this case (and others) than if you were to read A Voice for Men. And I’m sure that there are many who only read one or the other.

I sometimes feel I need a shower after reading both.

I like to feel that I have grown in maturity and ability to communicate since I was 20, but I don’t know the right way to ask someone who was a close friend why he raped me.

I found Sulkowicz’ commentary on the Facebook messages plausible. They don’t verify her accusations, but the Facebook messages don’t refute the accusations either.

This new accuser is a new wrinkle, though. Has “Adam” really made a new formal complaint? It’s harder to take accusations seriously, assuming he has made one, because of all the publicity.
