Hi, This is my first time posting a question so if I did it all wrong please forgive me. I am applying to boarding schools and was wondering about Emma Willard School NY, Brooks school MA, Blair School NJ, St. Margaret's school VA, and Foxcroft School VA. Which of these schools do you think are the best "fit" for me... or that you think I'll get accepted to.

I currently am a 9th grader attending a Junior Boarding school. I have a 94 overall average and am taking honors and advanced courses in everything but History and Science. I am in Algebra 2 Honors, Advanced English, Spanish 4 Honors, History, and Biology. I have played the piano for 8 years and have played the clarinet for 7 years. For clarinet I have participated in the All States and Regionals and have participated in many other competitions. In two of them I have won prizes. I have also been a member of the varsity crew team for two years, and the varsity ice hockey team for 1 year (I played on the JV team for two years before this). I am also a student proctor and library proctor. I am a lector and altar server at my church and tutor local kids on weekends. I am looking for a fairly small school- under 500 that has a very close, supportive community yet is very academically rigorous. Most of the schools I have looked at seem to have one or the other. Are there any schools out there that have a very close community and very challenging academics? Do these schools have these qualities? Which of these schools do you think I could get accepted to? I know it's hard to judge since you do not know me personally but if you could just give me an idea it would be helpful. Thanks.

If you take honors/AP at Blair, I think you will find the academic challenge you seek, as well as a close community. Blair has a range of academic aptitudes, with a range of classes. Did you visit? I think they offer you what you seek, but they do not have a girls ice hockey team. Perhaps that is not very important to you because I think some of your other schools do not have one either. You can ask the crew coach to create a winter workout program for you so you are prepared for the season. You sound like a strong candidate, but I cannot assess your chances. Blair is the only school I know well, so I cannot comment on the others. Feel free to ask me questions about Blair here or by private message.

You might ask your secondary school advisor is s/he thinks St. Andrews School in DE would be a good fit for you. Based on your list, I’m guessing that you are close to VA. Your secondary school advisor should also be able to comment on fit and strengths/weaknesses of the schools on your list.

You think Blair might be good for me? I did visit that school and LOVED it. If I got in I think that would probably be the best school for me but I’m just starting to wonder where else I should apply to if I don’t get in… Our secondary school counselor sadly is not very helpful at all so that’s why I’m posting questions here. I asked Blair about the girls ice hockey. They said if I’m good enough I could play on the boys team. They said there are about 4 or 5 girls currently that do that. Yankeefan I am retaking my ssat as I did not like my math score but I got a 92 overall percentile. I got a 99 in verbal, 95 in reading, and a low 80 score in math. I have not visited exeter but looking on Boardingschoolreview.com I see that it has over 2000 students!! I am looking for schools with under 500. Deerfield is unliked by my pre prep school so nobody really goes there. Supposedly it is very snooty. I would love to find a school that has a girls ice hockey team, crew, a band, good academics, and a supportive community, but since that probably won’t be possible I am mainly looking for schools with crew, good academics, and a supportive community. Any other ideas would be great. Thanks

Here are some schools you might want to research. They are all under 400 students and offer girls’ hockey and crew. I’ve listed them in rough order of academic intensity.

Blair and Brooks would be between St. Mark’s and Pomfret on my list. I don’t know the other schools on your list well enough to attempt to place them.

For more information on schools try the SSAT school search tool.

Sue22- I did visit Middlesex and got the feeling it was “cliquey”. Would you say this is true? I visited St. Mark’s website and it looks really good. What are the students like there? Do you think I would be able to get in? The only thing I did notice though that I was unsure about was that boys seem to be featured on all the pages. Is this school primarily boys? It seems like all the photos are of boys. Idk maybe I’m completely wrong. I guess that’s why I’m asking :)

Why don’t you try attending at any military boarding school. You’re grade are already high. You might excel there and become on of the country’s top office.
