What are these schools like now? They used to have a very WASP, white glove reputation. Jackie Kennedy, for example, went to Miss Porter's (Farmingham). What is the student profile like for schools? Are they brainy? Or do they just prep people for their Mrs. degree?

Miss Porter's and Emma Willlard are both extremely academically challenging schools! They are not finishing schools in any way, shape or form. I applied to both and LOVED them (nice people, warm feel on campus, amazing academics, etc.) but I decided to go somewhere else.

Last night, I was listening to my local ESPN channel on the radio when the host of the show, Brian Kenny, mentioned that the biggest sporting event of the day was⊠the victory by Miss Porterâs volleyball team, the âFighting Daisiesâ, over Williston in the Founderâs League post-season tournament. He mentioned that, oh by the way, his daughter was the captain of the team. Also, he continued to show his excitement for this team by stating that its record for the season was 14-4 (which apparently was the best record for the team in the history of the school) and that the team would host the next round of the tournament.

It was pretty neat to hear on national radio, while sitting in my home a 1000 miles away from CT, about an event (girls volleyball tournament) in which my sonâs school (Hotchkiss) was also participating. Just another cool quirk/perk you get from NE prep schools.

MPS is the feeder school for Vassar. The same traditions from Miss Porterâs School (daisy wreath, daisy chain etc.) are passed along to Vassar. MPS has to be academically rigorous to feed into Vassar. Not a lot of Vassar undergrads realize the roots of their traditions stem (no pun intended) from MPS.

@celebschools: Itâs, ahem, FarmingtonâŠnot Farmingham. ;-)

We had 1 child attend Emma and know quite a few people who attended MPS. Both are perhaps the best schools available if youâre looking for an all girls environment. While neither are âfinishingâ schools (far from it), we canât say âbrainyâ fits the description either. One big difference between the two: Emma is located in a decaying city, although the campus is really nice.
Having a historic figure such as Jackie Kennedy an alum to be a reason to choose a school would be a mistake. Youâre looking for the right fit for YOUR child, and not what fit a Kennedy. For what itâs worth, the many Kennedyâs have attended numerous different boarding schools.

I donât know if Iâd call Troy âdecaying.â Itâs really just more stagnant - a typical manufacting town that had its heyday about 100 years ago! The area immediately surrounding Emma is OK and the campus is indeed stunning. Emmaâs geographic situation kind of reminds me of Hill.

Well Iâm a sophomore at Emma Willard and I can honestly say I love it. âDecayingâ city or not, itâs a beautiful campus and the community is warm and shockingly inviting. So much different from my last school. While itâs seriously academic, it focuses on so much more than thatâŠThatâs just the tip of the iceberg. Itâs wonderful. I donât get the âvery WASP, white glove reputationâ vibe at all. I love going to school there and wouldnât have chosen anywhere else.
