Posting for my son

Decision: Accepted (College of Arts and Sciences)

Objective:
•SAT I: did not submit
•ACT 30
•SAT II: did not submit
•Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 3.83
•Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): top 10%
•AP (place score in parenthesis): did not submit (he is in the full IB diploma program)
•IB (place score in parenthesis): will take exams in May- estimated score around 40
•Senior Year Course Load: IB Math SL, IB Bio HL, IB Psych HL, IB English SL, IB Music HL, TOK
•Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): State recognition in Latin Forum

Subjective:
•Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): Biggest EC is his position as Young Adult Representative of Patient Advocacy Committe of the North American Thrombosis Forum (NATF), a national nonprofit organization; Latin Club (VP Academics), Central Florida Deep Venous Thrombosis/Pulmonary Embolism Support Group (Founder and President)
•Job/Work Experience: Summer internship with NATF in Boston
•Volunteer/Community service: over 500 hours
•Summer Activities: Summer internship in Boston
•Essays: Made some of his teachers cry- described how, despite his own medical problems, he has helped his autistic brother with his therapies and what impact autism has had
•Teacher Recommendation: Excellent; his math teacher showed us the letter (although my son had waived his rights to see them) and wrote that he mad never met any student with such passion in 25 years of teaching
•Counselor Rec: Excellent (likely)- she has known my son for 10 years
•Additional Rec: Letter of rec from a world-renowned Cardiologist at Harvard Medical School
•Interview: N/A, but he made a visit to campus
Other
•State (if domestic applicant): FL
•Country (if international applicant):
•School Type: Private, IB Program (son is doing full IB diploma)
•Ethnicity: Asian, Indian
•Gender: Male
•Income Bracket: $500000
•Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): my son is only one of 4 seniors in the country with a rare medical condition (about 100 in the world). He has been so involved with patient care advocacy and is working with two hospital to educate physicians about the dangers of blood clots.
Reflection
•Strengths: His “story”; IB diploma
•Weaknesses: ACT score
•Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I realize that I am biased, but my son impresses nearly everyone with his poise and composure despite his health issues, which nearly killed him twice. He is able to portray how he has overcome adversity and how he will continue patient care advocacy in the future. I really believe that this was the distinguishing factor. His ACT score certainly did not seprate him from the crowd. His letter of rec from the Cardiologist at Harvard may have given him an edge, as it indicated how passionate my son has been for advocating for a cause.
•Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: accepted to University of Michigan, WUSTL, Boston College, UNC Chapel Hill, University of Florida; wait listed UVA; rejected at Northwestern, Duke, Rice; waiting on Vanderbilt, Johns Hopkins, Brown, Penn, Yale, and Harvard
General Comments: I’m happy to think that they probably overlooked the ACT and looked at the rest of his application as his strength.

Why I think he did not get in…a girl in his school got in ED and Emory typically has only taken 1 from our high school over last 5 years. But his GPA was weak also. Got into Richmond (top of list right now), UMiami, Elon, USD, Waitlisted at Emory, WashU, Rejected at Duke and UVA. Waiting on Gtown and Vandy, but not feeling hopeful

jans, dunno what your son wants to major in, but, FWIW, I was surprised to see the other day how amazingly strong some of the departments are at Miami. I didn’t/don’t know anything about the school except their sports programs, but I happened to be downloading a paper by somebody on the faculty there and nosed around. Some powerhouses.

Anyhow, good luck.

Accepted to both emory and oxford  as an international student I am not eligible for need based aid and I noticed there was no merit scholarship letters. Do those come in late or does it mean I didn’t get any?

Ha! Thanks for the answer  I got accepted! Yaaay
Hope you guys were accepted, too!

Saymiti, internationals aren’t eligible for aid, be it merit or financial. Also Emory doesn’t give out merit scholarship to students who failed to apply for Emory Scholars/ a few other, smaller, scholarships.

Also CONGRATS to the Class of 2017!

I wasn’t accepted as an Emory Scholars semi-finalist but I was really hoping to get a merit scholarship (financial aid just isn’t enough).
Does anyone know if there is a possibility? Has anyone been notified?

Emory may be too nerdy for her. She likes to have a good time and do sorority
Stuff.
Also got Oxford 10 k year for 4 years
Anyone really social and not a book worm please reply !

@sunny emory has lots of greek life! And it is NOT book worm. If you want book worm, got to Georgia Tech. I think emory will be a great fit for her

Sunnyflagirl,
If your daughter wants a thriving greek scene, she’ll certainly find it at Emory. Though the US News claims slightly less than a quarter of all Emory students are greek, I suspect the real figure to be at least 33% since freshmen don’t rush until their second semester, and internationals, a significant contingent of Emory’s population, don’t have much interaction with domestic students. I’m not affiliated with a sorority, but I’ve heard that though they do plenty of traditional Greek things like mixers, road trips, etc, Greek life at Emory is very different from Greek life at Vanderbilt, Tulane, or Alabama. What the sorority girls mean by this, I don’t know.

I go to Oxford and consider myself a bit of a science geek, so I’m probably not the best person to comment on whether Emory is too “nerdy” for your daughter. Assuming Emory’s affordable, you should visit both Tulane and Emory and have your daughter decide which school she likes better.

I am having trouble viewing my waitlist decision; can anyone help me?

As in?
Your emory opus account ?
