Emory, Carnegie Mellon, or UChicago? Which one should go?

I've got a 2300+ SAT, 4 subject tests over 780, all 5s on AP exams taken so far, but a 3.6 GPA (Probably top 12% in-class in school @ CA, best estimate). With that, I'm debating whether I should apply to Emory or Carnegie Mellon.

I'm interested in studying a social sciences major (either Economics, International Politics, or Political Science) with a minor in biology or something while on a pre-med track. Trying to decide which of these schools to ELIMINATE from the list of schools I'm applying to, because I've got too many on my list right now and I need to pare it down somehow.

Any advice on distinctions between the schools, or if it's not in my interest to apply to one of the schools b/c my chances aren't too great anyway, opinions on those programs at these schools, or something that'll help me pick between these?

Personally, I feel UChicago would be the best fit because their economics program is among the best in the nation.

If it were me, however, I wouldn’t pick UChicago. There really isn’t a laid back atmosphere, and many of the students are overworked, and overwhelmed with a lot of work. Personally, I would pick Emory because it balances a social life and academics, while still being a highly respected school. UChicago is also one of the most stressful universities around, I have heard.

Why eliminate a school? Why not apply to all 3? I had the same mindset as you did in the fall: I thought i had to eliminate a school, so I eliminated Rice. I am glad that I decided to put that back on my list last minute because it was the cheapest private school option for me after FA (cheaper than Emory was for me). Seriously, unless paying application fees is a problem (which you can try and get a fee waiver for), sending another application will only take an extra 1-3 hrs of ur time… you will be happy you applied in April.
