native american indian or asian indian? I’m guessing the latter, which means you’re one of the most overrepresented minorities (oxymoron) out there

it’s not just the early notification. It’s also the greater leniancy and all these special programs and paid visiting trips that urm’s get. they’re treated like vip because of their skin color. oh well… I guess gold is valuable because it is rare.

jym626: totally agree, but tell that to Emory, Vanderbilt, Wash U etc…there is one kid in my d’s class who was admitted to all 3 before everyone else.(and only 1 of 2 accepted to Wash U with 20 waitlists)…upper middle class, same opportunities as everyone else here…
gotta go with “rounding out the class”…

Righto, rodney. We are slso sitting here waiting to hear from Emory and Vandy. Others who applied RD have already heard. This process is becoming weirder and wierder. I guess nobody said life was fair.

OPUS works fine for me, nevergettingin. I think it was probably just some obscure server problem.

Actually I’d love to hear the argument for how disagreeing with affirmative action is ‘thinly veiled racism’. I’m not being sarcastic. I’ve yet to hear a good reason for it, and would genuinely like to know the logic behind that. Of course, a results thread probably isn’t the best place in the world for it. I’m pretty much a bleeding heart liberal and don’t think it’s the best policy. No need to revert to name calling.

Is it really necessary to keep talking about it? I mean, it isn’t like people who have not heard already have to wait much longer. And there are other threads that talk more about affirmative action. If you really want to find out more, I advise you to check one of those out or even research more on the internet. As you said, a results thread is not the best place for it.

And I have also been having problems with OPUS. Not the problems that you have describes but problems nonetheless.

^^ Talking about what? The inconsistencies within the release of the admissions information? I don’t see anything unreasonable about discussing that. What I do find unreasonable is calling any such discussion “veiled” or “repressed” (as it originally said) racism. That is inappropriate and distasteful, IMO.

I actually disagree with affirmative action, I think priority should be given to low-income students, regardless of ethnicity. I wasn’t referring to people who disagree with it.

However, saying,

“jeez you URM get so much special treatment. I congratulate you all but it still makes me a bit sick.”

strikes me as ridiculous. Yes, minorities in this country, have by and large, been treated in an excellent fashion, and enjoy many more opportunities than the rest of us. Uh…no. Maybe in college admissions, but that’s where it ends. Again, I disagree with AA, but what “makes me sick” are the hate crimes and other injustices towards minorities that occur in this country every day, not the one, insignificant time when the tables are turned.

While everyone’s points so far have been well thought out and clearly expressed, I feel like this discussion should be moved to another thread. This is a “results” thread, and the joy of getting into a college should not be tarnished with this debate in my opinion.

Nowhere in this thread did ANYONE say ANYTHING like
IMO, Posts #44 and #54 are attempts to derail this thread into a discussion that does not belong here or anywhere. It simply is inappropriate. Ignore and move on.

Oops. Must have missed that. Lets ignore or report inappropriate posts rather than tank a discussion. Inequality is unpleaseant . Agreed. Lets move on.
