<p>What is URM anyways? :D</p>
<p>I’m African American and I got that email yesterday to. And sure enough, I checked online at 8 am this morning, and I got in! In the acceptance letter there was an invite to the “Essense of Emory” program for African Americans and Hispanics, so I think this was just a URM thing…</p>
<p>“Congratulations! It gives me great pleasure to invite you to join the Emory University community as a
member of the Emory College Class of 2014. I’m sure that you are relieved that the standardized tests, the
paperwork, and the waiting have finally ended as you now look forward to new challenges.
The Admission Committee reviewed thousands of applications during the selection process for next year’s
first-year class, and among that group of strong students, you are a standout. Your academic record is an
impressive match for Emory’s challenging learning environment. The College will benefit from your outlook
and insight as much as you will benefit from Emory’s tradition of academic excellence and its dynamic and
diverse community. I hope you will join us here.
We will mail additional details about your admission. To reserve your place in the Class of 2014, you must
send a non-refundable deposit of $450 along with Emory’s Admission Response Card no later than May 1,
2010. The deposit includes an orientation fee, a housing reservation fee, and a credit towards the first
semester tuition. Please note that a deposit should only be sent to the one school you plan to attend. Visit
[Regular</a> Decision Admitted Student Information | Emory College of Arts and Sciences Admission](<a href=“http://www.emory.edu/admitted]Regular”>http://www.emory.edu/admitted) to print Emory’s Admission Response Card, to review information about your
admission, and to learn about important next steps. Your admission is conditional pending receipt of your
final secondary school transcript and documentation of graduation. Note that the Admission Committee
requires the same level of academic achievement and personal conduct through the completion of your senior
year. Failure to maintain this level of performance and schedule of courses could result in a withdrawal of
our admission offer.
To help you decide that Emory University is the best match for you, your acceptance letter will also include
an invitation to attend Essence of Emory, April 8-11. This program for admitted African American and
Latino students offers you the opportunity to visit the campus and to meet students, faculty, and
administrators. During the weekend, you will have the chance to stay in one of our residence halls, attend
class, eat in the dining halls, and explore our beautiful campus. In conjunction with various multicultural
groups here at Emory, the Office of Admission has compiled a thorough list of activities and programs that
will provide an extensive introduction to Emory College.
Later this spring you will receive information about orientation and academic advising from the Dean of
Emory College. New student housing information will be sent in April. If we can assist you as you finalize
your plans for the fall, please feel free to contact us.
Outstanding students like you are the lifeblood of this great university. I am happy to offer you a place
among us, and I look forward to welcoming you to Emory next fall!
Sincerely,
Jean D Jordan
Dean of Admission”</p>
<p>That’s what the message looks like, and I got accepted!</p>
<p>Again, the decisions are only sent to a limited number of people (all URMs). If you look at last years decision thread, you’ll notice that some URMs didn’t receive decisions on the 20th but had to wait until everyone else’s was released.

<p>it’s so strange how they let the URMs know first… i haven’t seen any other colleges do this. well congrats for those who got in</p>
<p>i see the term “urm” everywhere, but i am completely oblivious to what it means. Can anyone enlighten me please as to what exactly defines a URM?</p>
<p>URM stands for under-represented minorities</p>
<p>for Emory Univeristy, African Americans and Hispanics I believe</p>
<p>not Asians.</p>
<p>im hispanic from colombia and i didnt get my decision :(</p>
<p>you should call the admissions office and ask</p>
<p>so if ur an urm, who didnt get an email, or notification, is that an automatic denied, or wait-listed? This is really making me nervous.</p>
<p>i too wanna know this</p>
<p>In the lingo of college admissions offices across the country, URMs are African-American, Hispanic and Native American students. Asians are ORMs (over-respresented minorities). Most elite colleges like Emory do not have any quotas, meaning that they do not have a limit on any group, but they do have admissions officers in charge of minority and international recruitment. Somehow, it works well to maintain a rich diversity.<br>

<p>Asians are too good!</p>
<p>is it bad for an Asian to apply Emory since 1/3 of the students in Emory are Asians? Too much competition?</p>
<p>No, it isn’t bad. There are no quotas.</p>
<p>There are many schools sending out early acceptances just to URM. Vanderbilt did it at the end of Feb. and invited the accepted students for a weekend at the college (asian applicants were included).</p>
<p>Accepted today. I am multiracial black and white.</p>
