That makes sense and then they reweight based upon whether it was AP or something. So a B in an AP class maybe becomes a 3.5 which is better than if they didn’t reweight, say a B+, but is worse than them just leaving the +/- designators there and adding .5 or something. However, in a sense, though +/- can make us feel great especially when we hit the “+”, it can make little sense statistically speaking. Like a person who has an 81 is not really performing differently from someone with an 83, and certainly not to the point where ones admissions chances should take a larger hit than the other’s. The +/- system causes overall grade inflation while ironically amplifying small differences in performance. No wonder why students in HS and pre-professionals at Universities grade grub for every little point. In the case of a difficult course, one could argue that up to a 5-10 point difference in performance is unimportant in the grand scheme of things (especially if both folks were a decent amount above the mean). Maybe schools, if they want to reward higher performers in a range should only have a flat and a plus and drop the minus. Either way, I see what Emory is doing if that is the policy.
@ismitah Thanks! And no, I’m not majoring or (planning) to minor in music. That would be cool, but I get way too much anxiety performing as a soloist to perform that much, haha. I think that it is cool at Emory, though, that they care so much about the individual beyond stats, even when it isn’t major affiliated. If we get in, we’re sure to have a super diverse student body then
@bernie12 I was only planning on getting a sweatshirt that says Emory so I can take a picture in it and just have it. I don’t understand what you mean by wearing apparel of one school at another school… If I get accepted I will be going there so any Emory apparel I get I will be wearing only at Emory…
No, I mean, it is common to see students at elite schools, especially those outside of HYPMS or schools that have a large sports fervor. wearing the apparel of other elite (private ones at that, so it usually isn’t a state or sports pride thing) schools when the only connection is that they applied. It’s like weird because they will not wear the Emory gear. What is worse is that they are often schools very similar to Emory such as WashU or Northwestern… The same phenomenon happens at Georgia Tech for example where students often have on the apparel of other schools known for engineering (Berkeley, Stanford, MIT for example). It is almost like outward expressions of being a prestige whore more so than not liking their current school enough.
Yea, I am only buying apparel after being accepted. Afraid of jinxing my chances by buying apparel early.
I bought a shirt from emory a few years ago because it was from RED and it was comfy. I have just the one but if I don’t get in its not like I will wear it at the school I go to because I think it’s a loyalty thing but I will always love emory. I’m not getting rid of my shirt anytime soon.
@bernie12 so if I made all As after freshman year (assuming they still don’t look at freshman grades), even if I made an A- in a course I’ll have a 4.0? And I also understand why the apparel thing would be frustrating as it kind of highlights that emory wasn’t one of their top choices. Would it not be acceptable to wear like an Auburn shirt or something either on campus? Just asking because Auburn doesn’t match Emory prestige wise, but I’d still root for them since Emorys not exactly a sports -or football rather- school. And my whole family went to Auburn so I already have like 10000 shirts haha
@NeuroDude I know what you mean about the anxiety of knowing that our fates might be decided. What calms me is the knowledge that it’ll be fair. I honestly believe that if emory admits someone, it’ll be because they believe that person will be a good part of the school. And whatever happens, happens for a reason.
Hi guys! I just found this forum while researching, and I thought it was pretty cool and I want to hear all of your opinions’ on my chances of getting in through EDI
ACT - 29
SAT - 1860
AP - 7
Weighted - 4.1 Unweighted - 3.66
I’m dual enrolling this year (no need to grill me about that I already know they prefer AP), my highest math classes are Pre-Calc and AP Statistics, I’m a white female from a family of 5 (one attending University of Florida) with a $62,000 income.
As far as extracurriculars go, I’ve been volunteering at my local hospital since I was 15 as a patient attendant, and I wrote a really strong essay about my experiences there (I picked the Susan Grant topic about a decision I’ve had to make). I am president of Key Club and secretary of HOSA, and wrote about some of the things I’ve accomplished through them.
I wrote my Common App essay about the lack of formal sex education in today’s society, which relates to my desire to obtain a career in Public Health, Epidemiology specifically. My teacher recommendations were good, my counselor recommendation was really good.
I went to the Emory/ Georgia Tech consortium and my regional admissions advisor told me that they’re really looking for people with a “sparkle”, something special about them, and I fear nothing about me stands out. I can’t think of anything else that is significant, if I left something out tell me!
@kc2004 : There is not much evidence that AP is preferred. The only convenient thing about AP is that credit conversion is easier. In fact, many at elite schools think that AP is quite over-rated academically (Read about the Dartmouth controversy or how several schools don’t grant credit but use it for placement. Or the mere fact that some of the very elite schools still have placement tests for STEM and language courses) because while the exams are challenging, the actually learning environment typically does not simulate college learning environments which typically have large lectures and require much more independent learning (you are not having your hand held or being spoonfed material and question types governed by a standard curriculum). And reading assignments and HW assignments are often ungraded or not quizzed). Dual-enrollment will be sufficient to display academic prowess.
As for your chances, nothing special, but you could very well have a shot if everything else in the app. goes well. At least you are not applying RD which has a much heavier volume, so they should be able to look deeply at the application
@bernie12 I don’t know, the regional admissions advisor told me that they prefer students exhaust the opportunities at their school before dual enrolling, but I chose to Dual Enroll this year with the same logic that you just explained - I wanted to demonstrate my self motivation and my ability to excel in a college atmosphere. He also told me that EDI actually has the same amount of volume for Emory, if not more, so I do not believe that will help my chances. I was a bit cheesy at the consortium, and bought the admissions advisor a coke with my name on it (Emory has a history with Coca Cola), so maybe that’ll help my chances.
I also work 30 hours a week and have been since the summer, if that means anything.
Uhm, ED1 and 2 only get maybe 2-4k applications between them whereas RD receives like 15-17k. RD receives WAY more apps. I’m guessing he meant that the ED rounds had similar volume. If so, that is true.
@kc2004 hello! My interpretation of their whole sparkle thing is that they want someone who has a passion. Are you passionate about something? And does it show in your application?
10 more days…
@NeuroDude happy early Hanukkah! I hope the end of it bears you with good news :-bd
Thanks so much @ismitah, that’s so nice of you.
isn’t it interesting how emory hasn’t released a statement on their blog or the emory news wheel regarding some “early decision applicants” rise or something. I checked the past two years and they usually release a statement regarding an applicant pool rise. Im guessing maybe their just really busy this year or there is nothing special to report about the ED pool…
Maybe the applicants are all so amazing that they can’t make any decisions yet!
How are your stats @bigBoy2016?
