@VANDEMORY1342 : I don’t think Emory is dumb enough to evaluate that person’s stats by their ethnic group because it isn’t a dominating factor in their data (the income level is). It would be expected that maybe someone of that demographic would score about that high (if aiming for elite admissions) or do that well if they are as low income as that poster claims. Keep in mind that most applying to elites (or almost anywhere) from that demographic are upper middle class. If they were in that income bracket or higher, they would be at a disadvantage as I would argue that most white applicants in such income brackets are on average scoring higher than that. If Emory was extra stats sensitive, maybe. But those stats are definitely good enough to gain admissions for a poorer person. That score wouldn’t be particularly hurtful to their chances I don’t think. I think if they aren’t admitted for some reason that is academically related, it would be the relative lack of rigor, but that depends on their HS’s offerings.
Another thing that may sink them is if they have a 3.7 weighted GPA and then the unweighted is far lower.
I wouldn’t dare chance, because I don’t know. The best I can do is point out and contextualize the weakpoints based upon the data given.
@bernie12 My weighted is about 4.8. My dad had to leave the country to go Pakistan when his mother was dying and basically use all the money we had left and my mom got sick with very very bad pneumonia. I had str8 A’s and a couple of B’s until my last semseter of Junior year where I got basically a bunch of B’s I talked bout this on my app and explained why is was like this. But, I still stood high and made it through and got to the finals of a debate camp tournament.
@UptownChi : You talked about a couple of Bs in your application? Admittedly, I would not have done that. Space could have used better than explaining that you are human (you could have maybe been able to tell the story in a slick way that alludes to resilience and great performance under suboptimal conditions). Many students who are admitted in higher income brackets have a 3.7ish unweighted. Never waste time explaining Bs, an average grade (it literally just says that you had a tough semester or are generally academically superior but some subjects are not as easy. It isn’t that big of a deal if basically all the other grades are As, and it also matters if they were in easy vs. hard classes). This illusion that one must be ABSOLUTELY perfect to get into elites/Ivies is just that, an illusion. And the illusion usually completely cracks once you see the college grades, which even after accounting for all the ridiculous grade inflation, are substantially lower than the HS GPAs.
Also, with a 4.8 Weighted GPA, I am wondering how your HS weights courses and what other courses you have taken. Are there any dual enrollment? What is going on there?
@Bolsted101
Awww,thank you. It’s just a hypothesis based on what I know about admissions. I will say students that I gave Match or High Match to for other schools (like BU) that applied early got in, so I have some mojo left .
@lmpp Same, i’m in class right now and I have never felt consistently closer to a heart attack in MY LIFE. Like, I know ima get rejected but still, this sense of hope is intoxicating.
