Sorry @Oliea98 I agree with @dreambig2018 on this one. Its unethical, no point around it. And if Emory found out about this his acceptance will probably be revoked.
@thecoolboy1234 it says in the contract that if you can’t afford it you are released from the contract, so no, that is perfectly ethical. I would hate to judge someone based off of their financial circumstances. However, if he can afford it, I clearly said up there that it was unethical. But I just think it’s a little ridiculous to assume that a person who is so clearly doing something wrong would listen to some random anon he’s never met before give him a lecture online. He will suffer the consequences one way or another but this website isn’t made for “policing” so to speak, especially when he never even confirmed whether or not he had cancelled his Emory application since.
@Oliea98 The other schools that the poster mentioned waiting for are all private schools or expensive for out of stater public schools. The “I can’t afford” Emory defense isn’t going to fly. I think schools share a list of their ED acceptances so this poster could get in some trouble and deservedly so.
While I do agree you are released from the agreement if you can’t afford it, for ED1, deposits were due by January 15th while the results came out on December 15th.
The private schools that the above poster mentioned all have due dates of around Janurary 1st/15th around then. If the above poster truly could not afford it, he/she would have already told Emory that he/she would not be attending Emory by then before submitting the RD application.
That’s why ED’s come out so early so students can calculate if they can afford it or not. And if not, they will move onto different colleges with the RD applications.
Also, from the inference from the posts it seems like the poster did not let Emory know or cancelled his/her application.
Therefore, by reasoning I am inclined to believe that any action of applying to RD (aside from financial reasons like you have mentioned) is unethical. And as a student attending Emory I would not want a person like that if that was the case.
@thecoolboy1234 @MyOdyssey what I’m saying is beyond “inference” he never said whether or not he had cancelled his application, and while those other schools are more expensive, financial aid packages can vary greatly. From the sounds of it, no he has not cancelled the application, but if he has already waited past the deposit deadline and if the colleges do share an ED list, he will get in trouble regardless. This thread is supposed to gather information, not discourage people from posting it. Of course I’ll be attending Emory and wouldn’t want this person there either, but I’m assuming my telling him so wouldn’t make a difference. If you feel so strongly about it, you can send his post to Emory yourself to ensure he doesn’t go there.
@bernie12 @Oliea98 @ismitah @dreambig2018 Thank you guys for telling me this; I withdrew all of the RD applications the Monday after I posted these results. I discussed my ED acceptance with my Econ teacher and she told me everything you that guys told me because she once had a student who had an ED acceptance revoked because she did the exact same thing I almost did. I was basically trying to do what bernie12 described: testing my chances of getting into an elite school so that I didn’t put all of my eggs in the RD basket, but being the idiot I am, I didn’t even read the ED I contract. But I got everything under control!
Also, @bernie12 that actually makes perfect sense because one of my friends who has a 3.98 UW GPA (I don’t know her weighted, but I’m sure it’s at least 4.3) got accepted ED for UGA but scored barely a 1600/2400 on her SAT I.
Well, remember it isn’t really a fair or good test…because chances at ED are inflated because of the much smaller pool. ED should be the school you can really see yourself at and can maybe get into.
@394emory2020 I’m glad you did the right thing. Sincere congrats on your admittance to Emory! Wishing you all the best.
